How Not to Lock Your Bike

Does this look like it would deter any bicycle thief whatsoever? See a collection of lock and logic failures for both bikes and bigger vehicles in a collection at Locksmiths-R-Us. Link -Thanks, David!

Actually, you can remove the wheel and take the bike itself. Then you just need to replace the wheel, which is what some bike thieves do. So it's still a bad idea.

I am pretty sure they did realize it was chained to a sandwich board...they were discussing the fact that when you lift the sandwich board, the lock is still on the bike, therefore the wheel should be removed.

Just lift the sign and then carry the bike wherever you want, maybe even rolling it on the back wheel and holding up the front. Then cut the chain when you reach your "workshop". Pretty easy.

has anyone noticed that you could just lift up that board and slide the chain out from under it?

that's such a lame way to chain up your bike. really, the chain should go around something that's hard to lift up!

Regardless of what the chain is *around*, you shouldn't lock through just your front wheel - super easy to remove and walk off with the rest of the bike. Here are some really excellent locking tips: http://www.montaguebikes.com/folding-bikes-blog/2010/12/preventing-bike-theft/
