Why Is the Eiffel Tower Still Standing?

The Eiffel Tower, built in 1889, was a temporary structure. It was supposed to last only 20 years before being demolished. But Paris kept it, long, long past its design life. Why has it been so durable? Scientists are creating a detailed computer model of all of its components to try to answer that question:

But creating the model for the Eiffel Tower presented a technical challenge of a completely new kind.

One thing was that the realisation that its materials -- puddle iron (iron that is super-heated, beaten by hand and then folded over) and rivets -- perform quite differently from modern-day steel, concrete and bolts.

"We had to start from scratch," said Roussin.

Materials scientists carried out mechanical and chemical tests on samples of puddle iron to assess its resilience, and stress engineers revisited Eiffel's own drawings to calculate how the tower would perform under load from the natural elements.

Outwardly simple, the geometry of the tower itself posed some mighty number-crunching problems.

The programme had to take into account a range of weather conditions on a latticework of 18,000 metal pieces and the tower's additions, calculating the load vertically, horizontally and in 3D: in all, the model has an astonishing million variables.

They've already learned that the tower has shrunk five and a half inches due to settling.

Gotta agree with Gerry. You can see this with lots of modern engineering. Look at a car from the fifties compared with one of today. It is actually rather surprising. Also, things now are very utilitarian, and lack the mark of true craftsmanship. Things now are built, not crafted with care and an eye for aesthetic quality.

One very important thing is that engineers back then didn't build things with the 'just barely enough' attitude of today: Todays engineers use just barely enough materials with just enough strength to last just enough strains.
The old engineers couldn't make these ulta-fine calculations so they OVERBUILT with plenty of safety margins.

That's why old stuff lasts while today's stuff falls apart.

Studies also show that people are more likely to use IE at work, where they have no browser choice. There is speculation that people at work do worse on online IQ tests as well, since they are SUPPOSED to be working.

Another important thing to consider: IQ Test results are not a good measure of intelligence, especially the kind often given online. The only thing IQ Tests (especially online ones) test is your ability to take IQ tests.

Sit back and watch IE users rationalise: The test was too hard. My pencil broke. I wasn't ready yet. It is biased. Not measuring real IQ. The sun got in my eye. I was meant to be working. The study was too small. My boss made me use it. I wasn't really trying. My hands were slippery. My mother said I'm clever. The score is low because so many use it. A movement distracted me. High intelligence doesn't mean you're smart. That was just for practice...

Apart from what has been said already:

First: I am skeptical about the methodology. I'm not sure this "study" would hold up to proper scientific scrutiny.

Second: The consensus in geek circles is that IE is pretty much the worst browser to choose from. In that respect it is no surprise that IE scores badly. (Yes, I am assuming the average IQ in "geek circles" is above average.)

PS: The results might be skewed because a lot of senior citizens (or others) are probably using IE because they don't have enough experience with computers or matters related to IT or just don't care. That does not mean they are more stupid.

You "geeks" are becoming incredible snobs. The average web surfer goes online, looks at some sites, and maybe leaves a comment. IE is fine for that. To equate the browser someone uses with their inteligence is, quite frankly, stupid and judgemental. Get over yourselves.

Yes, that did sound snobbish. To be honest I don't really thing geeks are smarter. (How do you define geek anyway.) I was just trying to look for an explanation really. And I don't consider myself a geek either, unless not using IE counts.

It's a load of crap. Some people use more than one type of browser, for one thing.
I regularly use two. Sometimes it depends on the site I'm visiting.
