Worldwide lightning strikes for the six month period May-Oct 2010 have been compiled into a database and plotted on maps. Embedded above is the distribution of lightning in the United States; the deep purple color represents 32 ground strikes within a 20-km grid.

Clearly, the most disturbing thing about this is the utter lack of any trace of Michigan on this map.

I've lived in California most my life, I only got to see good lightning and thunder while in Massachusetts, Georgia and Florida. Arizona, New Mexico gets some nice storms along with flash floods now and again.
