Being Grumpy is Hazardous to Your Health

Alex

We've all heard about the Type A personality, but did you know that there are Type B,C, and D?

T Goodman of InventorSpot explains the difference between the personality types, and why it's bad to be the grumpy Type D:

Now, Type D's have been described as anxious, irritable, and pessimistic. They are the grumps and the grouches of the world. They are not necessarily clinically depressed; negativity is just an overwhelming feature of their personalities.

Though some early studies had shown that Type A's were at the greatest risk for cardiovascular disease, later research found fault with that data. Now an in depth literature research of 49 previous studies involving 6000 patients, found that it's Type D personalities who are the most likely to have cardiovascular disease and are those most likely to have another cardiac incident after experiencing the first one. They
are three times more likely than other personality types, according to this research, to experience peripheral artery disease, heart failure, and heart attack.

While the article cites some recent research, the Type A/B Personality theory is basically pop psychology and has been routinely and heavily criticized.

Adding a category to a bad and outdated model seems a little silly.

Funny - I have always refered the Type D personality folks as "Eeyores" - they are the same people who overuse the word "sucks" waaay to much.

When I lived out in the country (we had 10 acres, most neighbors had 10 to 20 acres) there were all sorts of wildlife running around. Deer, coyote, red foxes, kestrels, eagles, red tail hawks, moles, voles and, yes, groundhogs! There was one groundhog that we named "the sentry" because it liked to sit on top of a wooden fence post and would stay there for hours just watching the cars and the world go by. One day my hubby and I went for a walk down the road which was unusual because we didn't do that often. A few hundred feet away from our home by the side of the road we heard a high sharp whistling noise. Upon investigation I found a baby groundhog dangling upside down with it's ankle caught in the crook of a small bush. Mama groundhog was frantic, running up to her baby and then scooting away when I approached. I bent the limb of the bush down and the baby landed on some scrub, unharmed, thank goodness! Mama ran to her baby and they scurried off to safety. I have sometimes wondered what might have happened had we not gone for a walk that very day.
