Golfer Swings, Hits Rock, Starts 12-Acre Fire

A man at the Shady Canyon Golf Club in Irvine, California hit a rock with his club, sparking a fire that required the labors of 150 firefighters to extinguish. Orange County Fire Authority Captain Greg McKeown said:

"Usually, we're able to close out the fire season in the winters here," McKeown added, "but we haven't been able to do that since 2006. That's just how dry it is out there."

McKeown said no charges have been filed against the golfer, whose name has been withheld. Apparently, he was trying to hit his ball out of the rough when he struck the rock, which sparked the blaze at 12:07 p.m. Saturday, officials said.

Why didn't he just stomp out the fire when it first started?

Its not like it went from no fire to a huge roaring fire in a second. -- Spark. Oh look bush is on fire. Stomp Stomp with the shoes and bingo no Fire.

I assume he was using a 9 iron for his hit out of the rough and not a Flame thrower.

If it was dry grass that started the fire, it often IS a huge roaring fire in less time than it takes to notice something amiss :( I can understand where you're coming from if it were wood or smoldering underbrush, but a swath of dry grass next to a forest that hasn't been burned recently is just disaster waiting to happen.

Sparks from hitting rocks are not an uncommon way that wild fires start around here. Whether it's while mowing your lawn or golfing, rock strikes can be dangerous.

@Bonnie L.

And for that reason, the Government should be making golf, lawn mowing, and rocks in general against the law. We can't run the risk of more damage (think of the children) - so lets get those lawmakers fired up eh?

The photo accompanying this story is preposterous. No self-respecting golfer would ever tee the ball up that high for a short iron shot to a par-three hole, which is what the photo appears to represent.

You actually believe this? Try sparking a golf club on a rock surrounded with the most flammable material you can find and see what (nothing) happens.

The golfer at the Shady Canyon Golf Course in Irvine landed a shot in the rough Saturday. On his next swing, his club snagged a rock, causing a spark that lit the rough ablaze and eventually attracted 150 firefighters to the scene.

makes me feel so much better about my golf game. According to the way this guy plays, if you swing and miss at a ball it counts as a stroke and then a 12-acre fire.
