Math Dances and Other College Application Videos

Some American colleges and universities now allow prospective students to submit videos instead of or in addition to written essays. The above video is one that Amelia Downs sent with her application to Tufts University. In it, she demonstrates dances that she invented that reflect mathematical functions. The New York Times wrote about this trend:

Even without prompting, admissions officials say, a growing number of students submit videos. Maria Laskaris, the dean of admissions at Dartmouth, noticed the trend last year, and said this year had brought even more videos, mostly showcasing music, theater or dance talents.

For Tufts, the videos have been a delightful way to get to know the applicants.

“At heart, this is all about a conversation between a kid and an admissions officer,” Mr. Coffin said. “You see their floppy hair and their messy bedrooms, and you get a sense of who they are. We have a lot of information about applicants, but the videos let them share their voice.”

So she has basic spelling and mathematical concept mistakes, has recorded it very badly (audio), and admits that she didn't come up with all of these moves herself. Sorry but it's a no from me!

Dancing to show you know math principles? Hey, according to recent research all you gotta do is chew gum to get smarter in math. At least that's what research funded by Wrigley Chewing Gum found:

Oh, that's not all. Another research study shows that if you either chew more gum or drink chocolate milk, then you'll get smarter:

Jeez! Is there any research that shows if you have more sex, you will become richer? No no, not prostitution.

This just proves what a self obsessed and fame seeking world we live in, where nothing is too sacred to exploit.

So now one of the school admissions criteria is going to be based on how 'hot' one looks (not that I'm saying the female in the video is)? I realize that looks are everything in society, from hiring to earning potential, but this is truly ridiculous extending it to admissions standards for schools.

No wonder the world hates us.

So now only photogenic people who have either skilled videographers among their family/friends or the bucks to hire a skilled videographer have a shot at college admissions?

This is a good way to remember the mathematic.
Because somehow it brings closer to the maths.

And if the teachers are tring to teach likes this
obviously this will help and also kids will remebers.

So i like the activity she has done.
Good One.
