Cat Called for Jury Duty

Sal Esposito of East Boston has been summoned for jury duty. He just might be excused for being a cat, but so far he is expected to serve. Sal's owners Guy and Anna Esposito think his name may have been pulled from census records, where he was listed as a pet.
Anna filed for Sal’s disqualification of service. However, the jury commissioner was unmoved and denied the request.

Sal’s service date at Suffolk Superior Court is set for March 23. Anna said that if the issue isn’t cleared up by then, she will simply have to bring the cat to court.

The reason this happens is that they (or someone) registered the cat to vote. Jury summons rolls come specifically from voter records. Don't be surprised, in Chicago dead people vote all the time.

I say don't take the cat to jury duty and let the sheriff pick him up after the judge issues a bench warrant. I'd then like to see the judge's face when the sheriff walks in with the cat in tow. That would be hilarious.

Jury summons come from more than just voting records these days, though that's the most likely for a pet.

However, this looks like nothing more than a publicity stunt on the part of the woman. Other articles mention(conventiently left out on web sites like this) that she sent in the form to ask to be excused and marked "does not speak english" - rather than simply writing in "this is a family pet" and actually telling them what's going on. She's deliberately dragging it out, for the attention (and possibly to avoid getting int rouble for registering the cat to vote, which would technically be a crime).

Jury commissioners are selected for the position only if they can demonstrate both profound cruelty as well as stupidity. I see it everyday:

Judge: Why did you bring your baby to court?
Woman: I told the JC I had a baby and no childcare but he didn't listen.

Judge: Officer, why are you here?
Cop: The JC said that only you could excuse me. The County is paying me OT to be here.

Judge: Cat, why are you here?
Cat: Meow?

"Cat killer? Is this the face of a cat killer? Cat CHASER, maybe --- but hey, who isn't?"
