Outdoor Fireplace for ... a Kindergarten Project?! Only in Norway ...

When architecture firm Haugen/Zohar Arkitekter was commissioned by the municipality of Trondheim, Norway, to build an outdoor project for a kindergarten, the company came up with this ... fireplace?!

Very cool, but not exactly the jungle gym I would've built for the kindergarteners: Link

How utterly marvellous. We encourage our two to play with fire, but though the school's quite good about such things (we had them all in the playground building snowmen while neighbouring schools were closed, yesterday), I can't see me persuading the head to do this.

I can't imagine Britain allowing a fire anywhere near a pre-school or school - our school children aren't even allowed to throw snowballs or use conkers!

The conkers thing is not by any means universal. There are two horse chestnut trees in our school's grounds and the kids play happily with no interference from staff.

Those that look to the future should first gather the vast experience of the past. Too many children are raised to be afraid of nature, and it's unfortunate that these days we strive to raise our kids in child safe bubbles which were born from their plastic bags.

Oh look! It's a Daily Mail reader. Sorry but there is no ban on conkers or, indeed, snowballs in the UK. Only in the minds of the right wing, sensationalist press. You'll be telling us next that the government have banned christmas and immigrants eat swans. Go back to your groundless bigotry in isolation and leave the rest of the world alone.

Getting back on topic: When I saw this story two words came to my mind: "Creep" and "Function".

you would think that perhaps the biggest discovery of mankind is in the curriculum of schools...but nooooo its scarry stuf nowadays.

Wibble! - ah, the august organ known in our family as The Bile Duct. The kids occasionally pick it up and my PiL's house and are frequently surprised by how little of it's actually true.

Speaking as a Finn I'm amused by the people who think we need to "protect the children" thinking this is bad thing.

Obviously a space like this wouldn't have a fire lit unless there is adult supervision, and when you do light the fire the kids get a chance to learn how to act responsibly around a fire.

We should strive to empower children to do stuff instead of shielding them from everything conceivable. Protecting kids from real threats is different from teaching them how to manage risks.
