Paintings of Meat

Image: Victoria Reynolds

Artist Victoria Reynolds creates paintings of raw meat, such as the above "Flight of the Reindeer", an oil on panel from 2003. A native of Texas, she got her BFA at the University of Oklahoma and her MFA at the University of Nevada. Reynolds now lives in Los Angeles and has exhibited in the U.S. and Europe.

Dudes, isn't this an anti-meat message? You're supposed to think about the poor reindeer.
Wonder why she didn't use a cow or a pig? Is it because people aren't especially sympathetic to cows or pigs?

Ahh, but the noble reindeer, wapati, who, but for the evil butcher, would be grazing peacefully through the tundra or pulling Santa's sleigh.

Wonderful, love it. for those that don't "get it" it's not always about content, sometimes it's just about form. Makes me think of Serrano's photographs from the 90s where he creates the most stunningly beautiful images from disgusting or distasteful materials. Definitely one to watch in my opinion.

I worked in a tattoo shop once where one of the artists was obsessed with doing meat tats - she had T-bone steaks etc. all over her flash. She even had one design that was the Virgen de Guadalupe with platters of raw meat in her hands. Irreverently awesome.
