"Poor Man's Meal" - a Depression-era recipe

[YouTube - Link]
91-year old Claire shows how she cooked meals during the Great Depression.  Nothing special - potatoes and hot dogs - but her commentary does make today's problems seem less intense.

"I had to quit high school because we couldn't afford socks...we couldn't afford anything to wear."

WOW I just made this for lunch and sit down to check out neatorama. I made mine with bacon and course ground pepper and last week we made the same thing with onion soup mix to season the potatoes, bacon, and onions.

This is also great camping food

Back in college (starvation days), I'd buy a 10 lb. bag of red-skinned potatoes each week and a few sticks of butter. Lived off that exclusively for one year. Got a bubble-butt as a result. Took another year to rid myself of "bubble-butt". The taters were cheap and good and kept me alive during that time.

She used a couple tablespoons of tomato sauce or spaghetti sauce I believe. She's so cute. Looks like I'm having me some poor mans dinner for lunch and dinner today!! Yum! I'm going to add some green pepper and lots of garlic and serve it with toasted bread.
