Woman with World's Longest Fingernails Lost Them in Car Crash

Lee Redmond of Salt Lake City, Utah, was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the longest fingernails in the world.  Totalling over 28 feet long, she was once offered $10,000 by a Japanese television program to cut her fingernails:

Redmond's nails, which hadn't been cut since 1979, were broken in the crash. According to the Guinness Web site, her nails measured a total of more than 28 feet long in 2008, with the longest nail on her right thumb at 2 feet, 11 inches.

Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Don Hutson says Redmond was ejected from an SUV in the crash and taken to the hospital in serious condition.

I hope she is okay but can you imagine what the EMTs thought when they got to her and I wonder if her nails hurt anybody else....you know the whole 'I'm gonna get killed by the guy in the car who doesn't have his seat belt on' type of thing.
I wonder what she does for a living?

It's really sad that she will have to start all over. All of us girls know if you lose one or two nails, you might as well cut them all down to match. I hope she lost them ALL at once, coz then she won't have to make that difficult decision. What a trying, trying time for her. I hope she's okay, besides losing her nails that is. They were probably like old friends. She'll save gobs of money on nail polish and nail polish remover however. Always a silver lining to anything I guess. Keep us posted. We'll all be worrying about her.

ew. also? way to eschew the utility of opposable thumbs and general digital dexterity in favor of a time when lesser life forms just pawed uselessly at things.

She is a disgusting person, looking for nothing but the shallow attention that comes with being a freak.

How did she function in life, in society? Imagine her doing simple things like grocery shopping. Imagine how intrusive those stupid nails were. Imagine how much she disgusted those around her, by walking around with 30 year old nails. What is wrong with an attention-grabbing loser like this?

I, for one, am thrilled she lost her nails in this accident. Had she been wearing a seatbelt, the outcome may have been better, but I really wish it was actually worse. Much worse.

Our society does not need shallow show-offs like this.

I can't feel sorry for this person. I have, in the past, come across people who make a "statement" with their fingernails, whether it be with garish appliques on nails too long to allow for normal digital function or with glued-on extensions that can only be described as weapons.

There is a record for the longest eyebrow hair ever achieved. There is a record for the longest nose hair ever grown. Fine and good (I suppose), but these are not debilitating features.

Yards of fingernails is something better shed than cultivated.

I hope that at least several shards went home with the EMTs. Keep an eye on EBay, folks!
