The Hot Dog Launcher: Everything You Always Wanted to Know

It's all about turkeys this time of year, blah blah blah. What about the hot dog?

Slashfood found a great video about the effort it takes to design the Phillies' air cannon that shoots hot dogs at games. This is scientific stuff - they go through small trial runs and even position people in an otherwise empty stadium to gauge how far they can launch and figure out the angles. But you can see that they have a lot of fun with it.

Even better, Red Tettemer, the ad agency that created the video, has redesigned their home page to reflect their dog dedication.

to my snobby eyes, this is just another symptom of why this country is going downhill all the way, people getting excited about a mascot for a professional sports team firing shitty processed food at them. and with a Baltimore/Philly accent, two of the most annoying sounds. empty, shitty lives. yes I'm a snob, but not all cynics are wrong...

They shoot hot dogs at ICubs games as well - it's fun and no one gets injured. And they are definitely eaten. If you're going to be worried about projectiles at baseball games, I'd be much more concerned about the ball. :)

The Kansas City Royals also shoot hot dogs from a hot dog launcher into the crowd. I was at a game once where the hot dog literally exploded as it was launched. Bread and hot dog chunks flying everywhere like shrapnel. It was great.

This needs to be part of the Allstar Game. Which major league mascot/team has the best ballistic tubesteak system? Points will be awarded for range, accuracy and rate of fire. There will be three divisions: human-powered (or is that mascot-powered), pneumatic, and open (anything goes; I'm thinking rockets).

Ummm, that is what she said zlogblog.

I'm just wondering what other traditional foods we can shoot at people now that we've harnessed the power of compressed air. Cracker Jacks? Beer? Maybe a home version where you can launch apple pie across the living room.

Hey there: Thanks for posting this on ur blog. We had a ball shooting the piece (no pun intended, I swear!).

@sw: in response to ur question do people eat the hotdogs shot into the crowd? The answer is yes - they are wrapped well before propelled! Also, the crowd moves eagerly to catch the hotdogs, and catches are rarely fumbled;)

You'll have to come to Citizens Bank Park next season for a Phillies game and check it out!

When I saw that engineer measuring the hotdog with a micrometer, I knew that great things were on the way. And they didn't disappoint. Bravo! Someday we'll have the technology to send hotdogs to the moon, and our astronauts can have a little snack while golfing.
