George Carlin, RIP

Comedian George Carlin has just passed away. Known for his acerbic wit and raunchy humor, Carlin was most famous for his "Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television" routine, where he did actually say all 7 words, and for which he was actually arrested.

In honor of George Carlin, here are 10 quotes to remember him by:

"I am" is reportedly the shortest sentence in the English language. Could it be that "I do" is the longest sentence?

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little.

One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor.

The main reason Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live.

Well, if crime fighters fight crime and fire fighters fight fire, what do freedom fighters fight? They never mention that part to us, do they?

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy.

“The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.”

Some people see things that are and ask, Why? Some people dream of things that never were and ask, Why not? Some people have to go to work and don't have time for all that.

And here's George celebrating his 70th birthday in this HBO Special "It's Bad For Ya":

George Carlin, RIP.

Update 6/24/08 - Teresa of PeopleJam told us that George Carlin's daughter, Kelly Carlin-McCall, has a website where you can post your condolences and thoughtful sentiments - Thanks Teresa!

This is a sad day; George Carlin was a passionate advocate for rationalism and common sense while so many people gravitated toward mumbo jumbo. He was one of those rare people who could be poignant, profound, and funny at the same time. He will be very much missed.

Mr. Carlin was the greatest standup comedian ever and he will be missed by everyone. His impact on comedy and joke telling cannot be underestimated: every comedian working today will throw high praise Carlin's way.

Neatorama should have done their homework: There are plenty of those quotes up their that are NOT Carlin. Carlin's own website has a list of jokes that are specifically not his and some of them are included here. Someone didn't do their homework and its a shame.

Cheers, George. You'll be missed.

I remember seeing Carlin on the Johnny Carson show years ago. He got up on stage and didn't say a word; just made goofy faces at the audience that made people wonder what he was thinking about. Rolling in the aisles.

And after hearing his brand of dirty humor, including The Seven Words You Can't Say On TV, imagine my surprise to hear his voice as the narrator as my kids watched Thomas The Tank Engine. Oh the irony.

Will the media faun over the death of this great american like they did over Tim Russert?

Carlin did more for this country through his comedic social commentary then Russert ever did on MTP.

Once again the media fails us.....over and over and over again.

George Carlin hated euphemisms, to his enduring credit. So, George Carlin has NOT "just passed away"; George Carlin has just died. He was the great anti-BS avatar. I wonder if he is right now asking God if he can create a rock so heavy even he can't lift it?

Sad. He was one of the greats. Been watching him since I was a kid (Yes, even his "Thomas the tank engine" stuff).

I wonder if his friends have moved his contact info to "Digital purgatory" folder on their desktop.

;)

(Sorry, Morbid. I know. George woulda laughed.)

Tim: Quoting a comedian who just died is pretty much summing up his life's work. If it's not accurate, that absolutely needed to be pointed out right the hell here and now. I mean, when else?

Crispin: Thanks for the linkage.

My Heroes Generally: Dammit people, stop dying.

From the Hippy Dippy weatherman to "When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops?" this guy was the BEST. God has his arms around him right now saying "Man, you were NUTS but so funny!" My thoughts are with his family.

Funniest old fuck on the planet. Could make me laugh, think and cry at the same time. I hope there always will be people like George Carlin, they keep the world sane.
