Can't Afford Food? There's Always SPAM!

At least one company is happy about rising food prices: SPAM sales are soaring as consumers are turning more to the much maligned meat to extend their already stretched food budget!

Kimberly Quan, a stay-at-home mom of three who lives just outside San Francisco, has been feeding her family more Spam in the last six months as she tries to make her food budget go further.

She cooks meals like Spam fried rice and Spam sandwiches two or three times a month, up from once a month previously.

Pulling Spam from the shelf prevents last-minute grocery store trips and overspending, said Quan, 38, of Pleasanton, Calif.

"It's canned meat and it's in the cupboard and if everything else is gone from the fridge, it's there," she said.

Spam is not a "cheap meat", it is a way of life. Spam-and-eggs, spam-and-rice (steamed white), spam-fried-rice, and spam-on-white bread. The Filipinos know this as well as the Hawaiians. "So easy, even Dad can do it!"

There is one advantage to being vegetarian. You don’t have to resort to questionable meat products as a protein source (I’m sure a can of beans is comparable in price to a can of Spam).

In our area, at the local (and much maligned) 99 cent store, cans of Spam can be had for, you guessed it, 99 cents. Certainly cheaper than ground beef, and mighty tasty IMNSHO.

I grew up in Hawaii and I love spam. I like to slice it very thin and then pan fry it. It gets somewhat crispy like bacon. Then you can eat it with soy sauce, rice and a little green onion its delicious.

@thomas: I used to use Armour potted meat for crab bait. Poke holes in the top, let it sit out in the sun a couple days and then pop it in a crab pot and drop the trap. Works pretty good. Nothing like Dungeoness Crab, caught fresh. I'll take that over potted meat or spam anyday. :)

"questionable meat products"

You are retarded, but I guess you hear that a lot. Spam is NOT questionable meat, it is in fact 100% pork shoulder. Since pork shoulder has more bone than meat, it is hard to sell. So they took the stockpiles of pork should and made a quality product out of it. Sliced and fried to a golden brown goes great with a couple of fried eggs. yum
