Man Beaten for Breach of Urinal Etiquette

47-year-old Edward Trevor Aldridge pled guilty to assault charges in Christchurch, New Zealand after an altercation in a mens restroom.
...[the victim] used a urinal next to Aldridge who accused him of looking at him and punched him twice in the face.

Defence counsel Liz Bulger told the court: "This incident arose from a breach of what I understand to be urinal etiquette."

The judge sentenced Aldridge to 300 hours incarceration and 50 hours of community service. Link -via Arbroath

I think there's a lot of restroom etiquette out there that most people know of, but is only slightly documented. (shameless self promotion for an old post of mine)

See, i can understand feeling a little upset if a guy chooses the urinal next to you over the one two down from you, but when is violence ever the answer? And on the other side of that, some people are just more comfortable with their bodies than others....

I know of a HS student who purposely broke etiquette to torment lowerclassmen.

Poor things would be berated for not standing nearby and making small talk.

Punching is a bit excessive, but urinal etiquette is serious business. Homophobia isn't the issue here folks, rather splash back and safety are my main concerns when tappin' the old kidney. A poorly designed urinal will spray fetid urine in all directions and that briny spray is no ocean mist, so stand the hell away! As for safety, when little wugou is cradled gently in my palm I don't want to worry that some stabby idiot is standing too close. Instead of punching, I usually just dribble a bit on their shoes and say, "Man, that water is cold and deep!" I love that joke ;)

Ironically, this guy may get sent to the clink for this rowdy business and urinal etiquette will be the least of his worries!

When in the Urinal Club (which all men are automatically a part of when they are born) you follow the rules or else suffer the consequences. ;)

In all seriousness I think the attacker may have gone a little out of hand. But then again that is why there are more than just two urinals in a bathroom so guys can have their space.

This all goes back to George Carlin's homo-buffer rant. If youre at the movies, and you have open space, you must sit 1 across from your friend. haha.

So why don't they just space the urinals farther apart? Wouldn't that solve the homophobia issue of having another man look at your wee wee? (Oh, sorry it's "splashing, not homophobia. That's your story and you're sticking to it. Ha!) Or put urinals in stalls. Women don't go around pissing in front of each other, we have stalls. None of it makes sense. Then again, I'm a woman and logic such as this is lost on men, the uncivilized gender.

When I was in high school, they didn't have doors on the toilet stalls in one of the bathrooms. Total lack of privacy for men. Society traditionally has placed less importance on the issue of men's privacy needs.

It's wrong for the other guy to be looking - no question - but beating up the guy is a little drastic.

That guy's lucky he wasn't charged with a hate crime, since he was attacking somebody he perceived was a homosexual.

Punching the guy was out of line, whether he was looking or not. The puncher could use anger-management. As for the other guy, perhaps this movie would help put things in perspective: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzO1mCAVyMw

So... what do you guys do if theres two men evenly spaced apart in a bathroom, and a third guy comes in?
Does he have to wait till one of the first two are finished, or does he just... wedge in the middle?

Thank goodness I'm a chick and don't have to worry about that stuff. For myself, I avoid public restrooms alltogether when I can. And never use one for more than pee'ing. Thats just gross when you go into a bathroom and someone is doing "serious business". Eww.

@Kerozene: If there's a toilet then he should go there.

Else he should go wash his hands first and wait.

Of course if it's super urgent he can go but must keep his eyes straight ahead.
