PC Games Hardware website has a neat gallery of the evolution of how computer games render water. It's quite interesting how they go from the simplistic lines of Flight Simulator (1982) to highly detailed renderings in modern games.
The small pic to the left is from Treasure Island Dizzy, a 1987 game for the Commodore 64.
