The Effect of Sounds Waves on Salt

An example of cymatics, {wiki} or the effect of sound waves on particles. Push play or got to Metacafe. You may want to turn the volume down somewhat -this caused my cats to run from the room! -via Videosift

That is so very cool! There was something like this at the Bose store in the Mall of America when I was last there; a clear box with styrofoam pellets in it and a speaker at one end. Turn the dial to vary the sound frequency and the balls would react to the changes in pitch. Great science fun.

Had to laugh about your cats running from the room though. I'm not at home now, but if I played this in the room where our canary is, he'd be singing his fool head off.

Daaaamn! And to think, I wasted all that time in college with a bong and a can of Play-doh. Guess I should have hooked up with what, the amplitude modulation geeks instead? Oh well, live & learn.

Damn, what is worng with my cat? He does not get scared or run away from any kind of noise. Barking noises? He doesn't care. Cat's fighting noises - loves'um. And now after I read what you said about your cats I tried this clip on him expecting him to react in some way. All he did was go take a whiff at the speakers.
