Arachnophobia City! Thousands and Thousands of Spiders.

The stuff of nightmares: thousands and thousands of spiders (or daddy long legs, or harvestmen, or whatever they are!). Found at Something Awful

My ex-girlfriend once told me that Daddy Longlegs are actually one of the most poisonous creatures on Earth, but they're not a threat to humans because their, uh, fangs are too small to pierce our skin. No idea if that's true or not and she was notorious for being full of [expletive deleted] but I try to avoid being covered with thousands of them just the same.

They actually busted this myth on Mythbusters. Adam put his arm into a tube full of daddy long legs. One of them bit him, and nothing really happened. They also analyzed the venom and found that it's not fatal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MythBusters_(season_1)#Episode_13_.E2.80.94_.22Buried_in_Concrete.2C_Daddy_Long-legs.2C_Jet_Taxi.22

Yes, good urban legend.

And I'm wondering why those creatures packed like that on the picture. Daddy long legs are cute, they are kind of weak and they don't run fast.

I'd be more scared of such a numerous army of brown recluse or even dumb wolf spiders.

Ahh, that photo brought back memories of the decrepit barn on our property in Texas. One wall was always covered with thousands and thousands of daddy longlegs. To warn you off, they would all start bouncing up and down in unison - very creepy and it actually made a fairly loud noise. OK, so one day I went in anyway and was ignoring the bouncing _ and a bunch of the spiders clumped together and fell off the wall in this big ball. I freaked out and ran away screaming. I SWEAR this is a true story. I don't know what their next move would have been. I didn't stick around to find out.

Shoot, those little fellers couldn't hurt a flea. They do tend to clump together like that, though. One summer when I was a kid at summer camp, us boys filled up a large coffee can with daddy longlegs and emptied it into the girls' cabin. You should have heard the screams.

Camping one summer a few hours north of Toronto I found that my tent became a gathering place for the little buggers. My tent walls are mesh with a windbreaking/waterproof layer above and they would come together en mass just on the outside of the mesh where they (luckily) couldn't get me but I could see them bouncing non-stop at all hours. One night I counted 60 or more just before bed. Alone they don't bother me, but yeah in huge masses like this one in the picture it would freak me out.

Just to clear it up... for their size and their prey's size, daddy longlegs have an extremely toxic venom... but compared to a warm-blooded mammal such as a human, the venom is practically negligible.

Woah, I'm really scared. I don't usually get these ones in my house but lately I've been seeing them here and there. After seeing this picture, I'm scared they're all gathering somewhere O__o

I saw this in real life one time. I was hiking up a creek in Northern California and saw what looked like a rock with fur on it. I went up to touch it, and the instant I touched it they all scattered! I literally screamed like a little girl! They were on an overhang above me so some of them fell down into my hair. I've never been so freaked out, and also fascinated in my life. I sat there and watched them a while longer, and after a minute or so, they aggregated again, and sat there, perfectly still. I have read a study on these creatures, they are known as Opiliones, an Arachnid relative of spiders. This behavior is apparently a response to predation. Amazing.
