Doctors Remove a 16-Pound Tumor From Marlie's Face.

Marlie Casseus, a 14-year old Haitian girl, suffers from a rare form of Polyostotic Fibrous Displasia. This condition is a genetic disease that causes bone to become "like a big bowl of jelly with some bone inside". In Marlie's case, it's a 16 pound tumor on the face.

From the website:

[Doctor Gomez] said Marlie is in constant pain and must be medicated but should have a normal life span with the operation.

Back home in her native Port-au-Prince, Marlie faced not only physical suffering but rejection by her neighbors as well.

"She was treated like an animal. If she was walking on a sidewalk, people would cross the street," Gomez said. "If they tried to stop a taxi, it would keep going."

Doctors at the Holtz Children's Hospital has performed the initial surgery to remove the tumor, but is seeking to raise funds for the reconstructive surgeries.

I'm so happy for this girl. I was actually in tears over her yesterday, not for her medical problem so much as people's reactions to it. You'd think it would elicit kindness, but so many beasts technically considered human love to kick at one who is down through no fult of one's own. Love to you, little girl.

We have ignorant people in this world. When I was on crutches because my toe was broke, I went to a store, the person in front of me walking in the door let it go and it knocked me down. He looked back and kept on walking. Everyone else around me tried to help me up but I had to go back to the hospital. My leg broke and my back went out. The guy that did this never had to pay because the court said a cop as a witness or a camera would have helped.

You can donate any small amount of money - it took literally 30 seconds (I should know, I donated right before I put this up on neatorama). Here is the link again: International Kids Fund

we were reading about this teenager and we just wanted to say that our hearts go out to her. I cant imagine that people would shun somebody that is already going through so much pain. We hope she stay's strong. God bless her!

I hope everything goes well with this surgery. I can't imagine how strong this young girl has to be in order to withstand this condition and its consequences. I would like to send my love and consideration to her and her family. God bless you all.
