The Case of the Malingering Cat

Posted by Alex in Animals & Pets, Health on January 5, 2011 at 11:56 am

Got a sick cat? Perhaps its malingering instead. That’s right: cats can act sick when they’re perfectly healthy simply because they didn’t like what you’ve done (i.e. change their routines):

When the cats experienced what were called "unusual external events," such as a change in feeding schedule or caretaker, the healthy cats were just as likely to exhibit sickness behaviors as were the chronically ill cats. The two groups had the same number of sickness behaviors in response to unusual events, and both groups were at more than three times the risk of acting sick when their routines were disrupted.

Remember that cat on a trampoline? Its owners are so going to pay for that by cleaning up tons of hairballs!

Kiwi on a Treadmill

Posted by Alex in Animals & Pets on August 17, 2010 at 12:25 pm

Piwi the Kiwi was born emaciated and with two broken legs. For a while, it looked like he wasn’t going to make it. But New Zealanders aren’t going to take that news lying down.

Here’s a neat story of Kiwi ingenuity in helping out their plucky national bird:

Losing blood, Piwi was rushed back to Massey University’s veterinary science centre.

Fortunately another kiwi was available to provide blood for a transfusion, and Piwi pulled through. But his fight wasn’t over.

Palmerston North physiotherapist Fiona O’Connor prescribed a strict rehabilitation regime, including treadmill workouts, massage and physio exercises.

It was the first time the veterinarians had used a treadmill for a kiwi’s muscle development … and Piwi wasn’t happy.

Wildlife vet Dr Lisa Argilla said Piwi didn’t take to the treadmill naturally, and would be grumpy when woken for his workout three times a week.

"He was particularly stubborn in true kiwi form, and just sat there [as if saying] I’m not going to do this.

"He’d bite carer’s hands when he got fed up with walking. But he’s quite a tolerant little guy," she said.

Inside Out Horses

Posted by Queuebot in Animals & Pets on October 23, 2009 at 7:52 pm

In order to teach horse owners about their horses, Gillian Higgins spends up to four hours painting anatomical features on her white horse – in essence, turning it inside out!

No more wondering about where a particular bone, joint, or muscle is located – they’re on the horse!

“Brullie” the Frog has Surgery to Repair Shattered Leg

Posted by Queuebot in Animals & Pets on April 1, 2009 at 10:41 am

After being dug up from hibernation by a burrowing dog, thereby shattering his leg, "Brullie" the frog underwent surgery and was fitted with a tiny steel rod to repair his broken lower leg bone.

Doting owner Anne Mearns, 62, said: ‘People think I’m mad to care so much about a frog but I couldn’t bear to see him in so much pain.

‘Frogs are famous for their legs, so the thought of Brullie being left lame broke my heart. I knew without surgery he would never move again, so I to rushed to the vet and begged him to operate.

The vet was more used to saving cats and dogs and couldn’t understand why I was so worried about a frog, but he eventually agreed.
