For the second year in a row, Greig Howe has created a seasonal spectacle with his 50′ Christmas tree. The 15 mile drive from the Forestry Commission to his home turned a lot of heads since he towed it behind his tiny blue G-Wiz electric car! Once home, the fir was to be part of an elaborate illusion. More to the story and pictures at the link.

Tesladownunder (aka Peter Terren) is the contributor of a number of items of high voltage arty goodness to Neatorama. Remember the Modern Thinker and sparks around a car?
His latest is a colorful 2 minute long exposure that looks most unlike a Tesla coil and marginally like an Xmas tree (but much better than the 2007 Tesla coil Christmas tree). No photo shopping, it’s all done with a flash and changing the position of the rod with the sparks as well as colour filters. The star is made of 10 dead fluoro tubes. Even Santa popped in to check it out -he obviously doesn’t mind a zap to the foot!

Jack Weir was clearing trees in his family farm with a Bobcat when a large cottonwood hit back and impaled him with a piece of wood 20 feet long and 6 inches thick.
What happened next was nothing short of a miracle:
A broken limb came flying in under the roll bar, spearing Jack through the belly with a piece of wood 20 feet long and six inches thick.
“I’ve always had a pretty high tolerance for pain. I had no pain, I had none,” Wier said.
Still, he knew the situation was desperate. That’s when Jack remembered the military mantra he relied on during his 38 years in the army.
“You define the problem…you identify alternatives… you accumulate relevant information… and then you make a decision. My problem was I got this tree in me,” explained the tree accident victim.

Amazing 1900′s green creativity from John Krubsack who decided to grow chairs! It took him eleven years to bend and graft stems and brances of elder trees into the shape of a
chair before it was ready for ‘harvesting’. Krubsack is said to have said the chair was ‘cemented by nature’.

It’s a house carved out of a solid tree trunk! This astonishing mobile tree house started off life as a mobile information centre for Forestry Tasmania. It has recently sold on e-bay for AU$12,000 where it grabbed the attention of the online world. Given the inside is a bit grotty, but with TLC imagine what a perfect spare room, library or playroom this structure would make. The possibilities are endless.

Sometimes the best idea are the simplest! Marc of Wooster Collective posted this "carrot tree" in Antwerp, Belgium.
Sadly, no other detail is forthcoming – does anyone know what this is all about? A viral campaign to make people eat their carrots? Link
Architects from the University of Stuttgart in Germany constructed a treehouse with a difference. The nine meter tall structure is made from living trees! Some of the hundreds of White Willow trees are planted in the ground; others are in containers. They are all expected to grow together into one giant plant. The experimental tower will be open to the public beginning September 19th. Link -via Unique Daily

Doctors operating on 28-year-old Artyom Sidorkin was expecting to find a tumor in one of his lungs, but they got a big, green surprise during the surgery:
Doctors x-rayed his chest and found a tumor in one of the lungs. Suspecting cancer, they made a decision to perform biopsy, but when they cut the tissue, they were amazed to see green needles in the cut.
“I blinked three times, and thought I was seeing things. Then I called the assistant to have a look,” says Vladimir Kamashev, doctor at the Udmurtian Cancer Center.
The five-centimeter branch was removed from the patient’s body. [...]
It is obvious that a five-centimeter branch is too large to be inhaled or swallowed, doctors say. They suggest that the patient might have inhaled a small bud, which then started to grow inside his body.

A family of foxes in Ipswich, England, have ditched their usual habitat in an underground burrow, and gone with something with a better view. Baffling wildlife experts, they have chosen to nest 30 ft up a tree!
(Photo: Caters News Agency)
Julian Roughton, of Suffolk Wildlife Trust, said it was an ‘unusual’ nesting place for foxes.
‘Foxes are quite inquisitive creatures but this is unusual behaviour for them,’ he said.
‘They must feel very safe in the tree and it might be that they are enjoying a sunny spot.’

Here’s something for you to ponder the next time you’re in the bathroom: American’s love for soft toilet paper is ecologically hard on forests!
… fluffiness comes at a price: millions of trees harvested in North America and in Latin American countries, including some percentage of trees from rare old-growth forests in Canada. Although toilet tissue can be made at similar cost from recycled material, it is the fiber taken from standing trees that help give it that plush feel, and most large manufacturers rely on them.
Customers “demand soft and comfortable,” said James Malone, a spokesman for Georgia Pacific, the maker of Quilted Northern. “Recycled fiber cannot do it.” [...]
Though most of the pulp comes from tree farms, but not all:
Although brands differ, 25 percent to 50 percent of the pulp used to make toilet paper in this country comes from tree farms in South America and the United States. The rest, environmental groups say, comes mostly from old, second-growth forests that serve as important absorbers of carbon dioxide, the main heat-trapping gas linked to global warming. In addition, some of the pulp comes from the last virgin North American forests, which are an irreplaceable habitat for a variety of endangered species, environmental groups say.
The workmanship and time put into this kids bedroom creation is astonishing. It’s surely any kids dream room, a great place to hide away and play, even when its wet and cold outside.
The beautifully designed room features a tree house in the corner, a swing and a custom built entertainment armoire with moving Library Ladder. As well as a colourful mural on the walls, it really makes me wish i was young again, although i would imagine the price tag would be way out of my league.
The custom creation was designed and built by Kidtropolis who also have some other exciting projects on their site.

The next piece of art to adorn your living room wall could be drawn by
a tree. British artist Tim Knowles has
developed a way of allowing nature to be an artist. His tree drawings
are created by attaching drawing tools to the tips of tree branches!

Talking about logging machineries, take a look at this harvester that can cut, delimb, and cross cut logs in seconds! Link
(Note: this particular machine, built by AFM Harvester, seems to be operating in a tree farm, not an old growth forest)
