Although it’s not made of carbon fiber, this toilet seat is made to take the most brutal torture tests that a human body can offer. It has hinged wings, too, for, uh, added stability. Perfect! I’ve just ordered one for my cubicle here at the office. Link -via Gizmodo | Photo: Adjustable Advantage

Toilet-Shaped House is Now a Toilet Museum

Posted by John Farrier in Architecture, Society & Culture on January 16, 2011 at 10:22 am

In 2007, we posted that Sim Jae-Duck of South Korea completed work on his toilet-shaped house. He’s a leader in the toilet manufacturing industry, and so wanted to have a home that reflected his passions. Now he’s turned his domicile into a museum open to the public. At the link, you can view several pictures from the grand opening back in December.

Cash Machines are as Dirty as Public Toilets

Posted by J.P. Cole in Health on January 14, 2011 at 12:04 am

If you get your filthy lucre from an ATM, you may want to bring along some hand sanitizer. A study conducted in England found the average cash machine to be as dirty—and carry the same germs—as public toilets:

Experts took swabs from the numeric key pads on a string of city centre ATMs around England which are used by thousands of shoppers every day.

They then took similar swabs from the seats of nearby public toilets and compared the bacteria under microscopes in a lab.

The samples from both locations were found to contain pseudomonads and bacillus, bacterias which are known to cause sickness and diarrhoea.

[. . .]

Dr Richard Hastings, microbiologist for BioCote, the anti-bacterial firm which carried out the research, said: “We were interested in comparing the levels of bacterial contamination between heavily-used ATM machines and public toilets.

“We were surprised by our results because the ATM machines were shown to be heavily contaminated with bacteria; to the same level as nearby public toilets.

Posted by John Farrier in Home & Garden, Living on December 22, 2010 at 7:42 pm

Sure, an ordinary toilet seat can withstand most, uh, loads. But if you need a toilet seat that can really take punishment without breaking, try this one made out of 550,000 psi tensile carbon fiber.

Luxury, Hi-Tech Toilet for $5,900

Posted by John Farrier in Home & Garden, Living on December 16, 2010 at 7:24 pm

This toilet by INAX USA has everything going for it. The lid lifts as you approach it. There’s a built-in air deodorizer, seat warmer, light, and stereo. It flushes automatically. Two self-cleaning nozzles spray water with varying intensity to wash and/or massage the user. The only downside obvious in the photograph is a complete lack of privacy.

Russia Wants to Be a Toilet Superpower Again

Posted by John Farrier in Living, Travel on November 17, 2010 at 12:39 pm

According to Vladimir Moksunov, the leader of Russia’s toilet manufacturing association, his nation had the best public restrooms in the world until the Communist Revolution of 1917. Now it’s time for Russia to return to the top:

He recalled that on April 9, 1699, Peter the Great published a trailblazing decree which made it a punishable offence to throw sewage into the street.

“But now we do not even have official regulations for the quality of public lavatories except a document from 1972 that talks about cesspits,” he said, adding that Moscow had a “crying need for modern lavatories”.

The state of public lavatories is generally seen as a disgrace in Moscow, with citizens having to endure stinking and ageing facilities even though they usually have to pay for the privilege of using them.

Warning Signs at City Hall Urge Employees and Visitors Not to Drink from the Toilets

Posted by John Farrier in Society & Culture on November 13, 2010 at 6:10 pm

Just in case they were thinking of doing otherwise, signs at the new city hall building in Chandler, Arizona warn people that they shouldn’t drink from the toilets and urinals:

A few employees have been cracking jokes and speculating about what it would take to make them slurp from potties when water fountains and sinks are a few feet away.

“I’m glad that I saw that sign because I was very thirsty and looking for a means to quench my thirst,” Mayor Boyd Dunn quipped. “Seriously, I’m certain there’s some regulation out there that requires that type of sign.”

Luxury home furnishings designer Windisch Nameek made a toilet brush and holder that’s plated with 24-carat gold. The vendor suggests that the advantage to gold is that it won’t pit, tarnish, or corrode. So it’s a practical choice.

Toilet Colors over Time

Posted by John Farrier in History, Home & Garden, Living, Society & Culture on November 1, 2010 at 5:28 pm

Ed Del Grande, a plumber, has an advice column in The Seattle Times. He responded to one query about home toilets by describing how the color of a toilet may indicate its vintage:

1920s: Rich pastels like autumn brown reflected fashion trends, and the surplus of beige left over from World War I found its way into our homes.

1930s: As the home became the focus of more activities, cozy neutrals like peach blow gave way to rich colors like dark green and maroon.

1940s: During the war years, the fashion and plumbing industries restricted the number of new colors. Some soil-hiding colors like olive green did appear.

Man Gets Arm Stuck in Toilet Trying to Retrieve Dropped Cell Phone

Posted by John Farrier in Society & Culture on October 20, 2010 at 7:38 pm

A man in Jiangsu Province, China, got stuck in a toilet when he dropped his phone inside and tried to get it back:

When rescue workers arrived on the scene in Jiangsu province in eastern China, they found the man crouched over the toilet in a bathroom stall, his entire arm submerged up to the shoulder in the drain.

Workers broke the porcelain bowl with crowbars and hammered the pipes, taking care not to injure the man, CCTV reported.

After 10 minutes of work, the man was able to slowly remove his cut and bruised arm from the bowl and retrieve his waterlogged phone.

Would You Like to Own J.D. Salinger’s Toilet?

Posted by John Farrier in Home & Garden on August 17, 2010 at 1:28 pm

I ask because it’s for sale on eBay. The toilet was removed from the late author’s New Hampshire home by the new owners in the 1980s. It hasn’t been cleaned yet, so it’s super-authentic. You can bid for it or buy it immediately for $1,000,000.

Might Toilets Be Placed Anywhere in The Home?

Posted by StevenMJohnson in Home & Garden, Museum of Possibilities on August 13, 2010 at 5:01 am

Cartoonists have a crazy streak. They can’t help themselves; it’s how they are made. As a cartoonist-inventor, I sometimes cannot resist the temptation to illustrate a concept even while knowing it is crazy, stupid or at least poorly conceived.  For instance, I have invented silly toilets solely to keep myself amused. I have also spent time pondering whether there might be non-traditional locations within the home where a toilet might be placed. Is it merely for reasons of tradition that toilets are consigned to bathrooms? Could toilets be placed in hallways, in dining rooms, or in the middle of the living room? Why not outhouse-like facilities (of modern design) on the porch, deck, or in the garden?

There are likely many good reasons for not locating a toilet in the middle of a kitchen. I understand that. But why not locate a toilet inside a shower stall? In fact, I can imagine extreme situations where water and space are so scarce, as on a submarine, where toilets might be incorporated into showers. But admittedly that is not the case in a home or apartment. But to see what it might look like, I drew a toilet inside a shower and I succeeded in amusing myself. I admit the concept is somewhat disgusting and disturbing given that dampness is the perfect medium for the spread of disease, contamination, smells, and so forth. I will give my idea an F for practicality but an A for whimsy.

Where else in a home might a toilet be placed? In 1983, I proposed The Living Bathroom, a space-saving concept for small apartments and cabins. I like my cute and clever execution of the idea, though I worry that the issue of odors was not addressed.

In 2007 I revisited my Living Bathroom concept, making it more stylish and adding a chimney. The chimney contains a built-in fan that sucks vapors from the toilet toward a roof vent.  Both the chimney and the toilet come in polished stainless steel and look very modern. Note how the Toilet Concealment Chair slips over the toilet. It rolls forward on wheels when there is urgent need to use the toilet.

Household Turbine Powered By Your Toilet’s Wastewater

Posted by John Farrier in Gadgets, Hacks & Mods on July 22, 2010 at 1:57 pm

Tom Broadbent, a student at De Montfort University in Leicester, UK, built a machine that harvests the kinetic energy of water that is flushed down a toilet. It’s called HighDro Power and can save about £926 in a seven-storey building:

He added: “HighDro Power works by using the water discharged from appliances such as showers, toilets and sinks in high-rise apartments. The water goes down the pipe and hits four turbine blades that drive one generator.

“The whole thing was influenced by traditional waterwheels to ensure that any solids passing through had limited effects on whether they could function.”
