Planet Shanghai: What’s In The Bag?

Posted by Alex in Pictures, Travel on March 25, 2010 at 4:15 am

Remember the brouhaha when someone in Wales, UK, got banned from the supermarket chain Tesco for wearing pajamas while shopping? Well, that’s nothing compared to the people of Shanghai. They’ve elevated wearing pajamas in public into an art form!

Award-winning photographer Justin Guariglia documented the beauty and charm of the PJ-crazy Chinese people in his book Planet Shanghai. Because of the upcoming 2010 World Expo, there’s renewed interest in the part of the city officials to make sure that the people of Shanghai are presentable by suppressing their habit of wearing pajamas in public.

Whether you view those who go about their business wearing pajamas as committing fashion faux pas or are hipsters in disguise, you’ll get a kick out of Justin’s book Planet Shanghai, excerpted over at our wide-format Spotlight blog: Link

Justin and the book’s publisher, Chronicle Books, are kind enough to supply 2 free copies of the book for a giveaway, so let’s have a little fun, shall we?

Take a look at the photo above and answer this: What’s in the bag?

The two funniest/best answers win a free copy of Planet Shanghai. Enter your answer in the comment section below – one entry per comment, please. You can enter as many as you’d like. Be sure to visit Justin’s website and our Spotlight feature on Planet Shanghai for inspiration. Good luck!

Update: congratulations to Clarabelle and Mr. Weaver who won the free books!

The Rabbit Building: Macau Pavillion at Shanghai World Expo 2010

Posted by Alex in Architecture, Pictures, Travel on January 13, 2009 at 12:21 am

If the folks at Carlos Marreiros architecture firm have their ways, the Macau Pavillion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010 will be in the form this glorious giant rabbit:

… the pavilion will be wrapped with a double-layer glass membrane and feature fluorescent screens on its outer walls. Balloons will serve as the head and tail of the ‘rabbit’, which can be moved up and down to attract visitors. The building will be constructed with recyclable materials and consists of solar power panels and rain collection systems.
