Laci Davis, an 8-year-old in Cincinnati, Ohio, accidentally ingested her necklace and heart-shaped locket, which lodged in her throat.

The third-grader was in excruciating pain.

“It felt like something was stabbing me right in the middle of my chest,” she said.

Doctors at St. Elizabeth sent her to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. It was the car ride that changed everything.

“We hit a pot hole and she looked at me and said, ‘oh mom, I feel better.’ I said what do you mean you feel better and she said ‘I don’t feel it anymore,’” Amanda Cullum, Laci’s mother, said.

The pothole dislodged the locket, which then dropped down into Laci’s stomach. The pain was gone, and Laci could breathe normally.

“It was my hero and I when I got home I was like thank you bump,” she said.

Doctors told Laci the locket will come back out “the old-fashioned way.” Laci says she’ll get a new locket instead retrieving this one. Link -via Fark

Forget asphalt! The artistic way to fix potholes is with some colorful fabric. That’s what artist Juliana Santacruz Herrera did for the sidewalks of Paris:

artist juliana santacruz herrera has transformed the streets of paris through her visual intervention using braided strips of colourful fabric. seeing the many cracks and potholes of the city as the ‘canvas’ of her project, the site-specific pieces are a playful addition to the grey urban setting.

long lengths of dyed fabrics are braided and then coiled into the shallow breaks in the street. often made up of a combination of bright colours, the resulting effect creates a graphic and visually-arresting contrast to the city’s palette.

Is this a great way to save public funds or a step down the slippery slope? KFC wants to fix potholes in city roads, then paint the company’s name on top. They’ve already begun work in Louisville, and have offered the service to other cities.

But Brian Steele, a spokesman for the Chicago Department of Transportation, which is charged with repairing the city’s potholes, said “We don’t allow any type of printing or advertising placed on a city street or sidewalk.”

He said the city was looking to promote and seek support for its own pothole repair program, and said they’ve been “in discussion” with an advertising firm for more than months about the idea.

As for the KFC offer, Steele said the city first learned of it Wednesday. “Were looking into it [the KFC offer]…..Until we learn more we don’t know how it stacks up.”

The KFC offer is part of its “Fresh Tastes Best” advertising campaign. Link -via reddit
