You can understand why someone would want to make a giant pie, but why make a fractal pie? Because the bigger a pie gets, the more the crust becomes overwhelmed by the filling. It’s simple math. Instructables member turkey tek solved that problem by using the fractal shape of the Koch snowflake. At this size, the pie had to be baked in a custom-made outdoor oven. The cake pie is 50 inches in diameter at its widest point, but could have been bigger if the materials for the cooking process were more readily available. Quick, someone tell Rupert Murdoch that getting hit in the face with a pie is fun. This 1960s game from Hasbro actually encouraged kids to give themselves whipped cream facials. A spinner determines how many cranks you give the handle, but how many cranks it will take to splat a pie in your face is a mystery. Super fun… right?

In the spirit of fall here in the Pacific Northwest, here is a recipe of my friend Joe’s own design! He sought to bring bacon to the dessert menu, and hunted for a pie media capable of sustaining a bacon infusion while retaining deliciousness. Pumpkin (perhaps rhubarb) is the only one he could think of. I offer this recipe to all you bacon lovers out there.

Danny’s most recent request was to bake some doodleberry pie. Obviously, we didn’t have any doodleberries handy. We went to Costco and bought blueberries instead. He said that would be fine. I knew pie would be ok to bake because I don’t really like pie. It wouldn’t be much of a temptation to eat the whole thing. Plus, I’ve never baked a pie from scratch. We both win. He gets pie. I get to stop saying I’ve never baked a pie from scratch before

I don’t know what a doodleberry is but I’m afraid to Google it and find out.

ScienceBlogs, together with Serious Eats, held a Pi Day Bake-Off to celebrate Pi Day on March 14th. They received 35 pie entries, which have been narrowed down to ten finalists. Not only are these “pi pies” decorated in a mathematically clever way, they look scrumptious! Shown is Claudette’s amazing One-Hundred-Digit pie made with cherries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries. Sure it’s not round, but remember, pie are square! “In tests we’ve found this can take around two seconds off the time taken to eat a regulation Championship pie.

“We’ll be putting a couple of big blokes on the door to search pockets randomly for cough mixture.”

Can’t decide what kind of pie to serve after Thanksgiving dinner? Make them all in one pie pan! Cakespy at Serious Eats experimented with pecan, apple, and pumpkin pie recipes to make this triple threat. The best results came from the pie divided into sections, as seen in the picture.
