You can understand why someone would want to make a giant pie, but why make a fractal pie? Because the bigger a pie gets, the more the crust becomes overwhelmed by the filling. It’s simple math. Instructables member turkey tek solved that problem by using the fractal shape of the Koch snowflake. At this size, the pie had to be baked in a custom-made outdoor oven. The cake pie is 50 inches in diameter at its widest point, but could have been bigger if the materials for the cooking process were more readily available. Yes, I will have a slice, thank you very much. Link -via Everlasting Blort

A spinner determines how many cranks you give the handle, but how many cranks it will take to splat a pie in your face is a mystery. Super fun… right?

Cathy of Olds Nighty-Eight made a Star Wars-themed blueberry pie for her young son using cookie cutters as molds:

Danny’s most recent request was to bake some doodleberry pie. Obviously, we didn’t have any doodleberries handy. We went to Costco and bought blueberries instead. He said that would be fine. I knew pie would be ok to bake because I don’t really like pie. It wouldn’t be much of a temptation to eat the whole thing. Plus, I’ve never baked a pie from scratch. We both win. He gets pie. I get to stop saying I’ve never baked a pie from scratch before

I don’t know what a doodleberry is but I’m afraid to Google it and find out.

Sadly, even competitors in pie-eating competitions have resorted to such nefarious cheating. But officials at the upcoming World Pie Eating Championships in Wigan, UK have taken steps to keep athletes honest:

Championships Executive President Tony Callaghan, owner of Harry’s Bar, said: “Gravy has traditionally been the performance-enhancing drug of choice amongst pie eaters at this level, but since we banned it after a series of questionable concoctions were created by contenders, they’ve been trying to find other ways of generating lubricative advantage – and we’re hearing rumours that cough mixture is the new Bisto.

“In tests we’ve found this can take around two seconds off the time taken to eat a regulation Championship pie.

“We’ll be putting a couple of big blokes on the door to search pockets randomly for cough mixture.”

Traditional festivities are to study the mathematical constant pi in school (which took place yesterday since 3/14 fell on Saturday this year), bake and eat a pie, and sing Pi Day Carols. Windell and Lenore at Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories used a 45 watt carbon-dioxide laser to score an Apple logo on the top crust of an apple pie. They used a square springform pan to get the crust centered just right, and kept a crust lattice inside the logo to prevent it from distorting while it baked. I heard it was delicious, too. Link
