AMC is promoting the return of the TV show Mad Men with a minimalist poster showing a falling man, with a blank expanse around him. The only other thing the poster contains is the date at the bottom right. That’s just asking to be embellished, and plenty of folks have great ideas about what to add. Photoshop Disasters is always good for a laugh -or a nightmare. I may be seeing this model and her “elbow that won’t quit” in my dreams for some time to come. She is one of the Top 10 Photoshop Disasters of 2011, but she’s not #1. Link

No word yet on whether or not the TSA will let you get on a plane with these 3D gun nails, but then again, it’s going to be pretty hard to load them assuming you have these on both hands, so maybe you’d be more of a threat to yourself than to other people.

These two photographs of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il’s funeral procession were taken only seconds apart, but the top photo was taken by Japanese press outlet Kyodo News, and the bottom one was provided to journalists by North Korea’s state news agency. North Korea is no stranger to photo manipulation; in this case it serves only the purpose of making the procession look more “perfect.” The details are at the New York Times photography blog. The possibilities of Photoshop are only limited by one’s imagination. I don’t know who originally had the idea to swap facial features in pictures of more than one person, but the results can be freaky! Sometimes the whole face is swapped; sometimes it’s hard to tell where each part came from in this selection of images from the Something Awful forums posted at Unreality magazine. Link

When you take the idea that a mustache can double for hair on the head, you get Moustair. It’s weird, I know. The tumblr site has quite a few examples of both famous men and submitted pictures. There’s something about these Care Bears that’s not quite right. Maybe it’s the massive fangs, or sharp claws, or the fact that the symbol on the bear’s stomach seems to be running. Something tells me these bears don’t want to hug and sing songs!

There are plenty of Photoshopped animal hybrids on the net, but BuzzFeed’s collection of cats with owl faces includes some pictures that look far more realistic than many of the rest. I don’t know about you, but these critters would certainly make awesome hunters.

It's no Ralph Lauren level of photoshopping but cosmetic maker L'Oréal recently got into trouble for airbrushing (already) beautiful women in its latest ads:

L'Oréal has been forced to pull ad campaigns featuring Pretty Woman star Julia Roberts and supermodel Christy Turlington, after the advertising watchdog upheld complaints by Liberal Democrat MP Jo Swinson that the images were overly airbrushed.

Swinson, who has waged a long-running campaign against "overly perfected and unrealistic images" of women in adverts, lodged complaints with the Advertising Standards Authority about the magazine campaigns for L'Oréal-owned brands Lancôme and Maybelline. The ASA ruled that both ads breached the advertising standards code for exaggeration and being misleading and banned them from future publication.

Someone watched an episode of Master Chef on Hulu and saw twins in this crowd scene. It must have been a thin crowd for the producers to decide it needed a copy-and-paste makeover. What’s the world coming to? It’s getting to the point where you can’t even believe what you see on TV! Link -via Breakfast Links

Even before the advent of digital photo manipulation, photographers were creating works of wonder using trick lighting, forced perspective, and plain old imaginative ingenuity. Sounds hokey, but it’s true, and it’s nice to see that it’s not a lost art.

The power of Photoshop is amazing, but still it doesn’t beat the power of imagination. Although many photos taken by professional photographers and enhanced in Photoshop can be absolutely stunning, the photos taken wisely and in a creative manner are even more impressive.

Today’s showcase is dedicated to such photos, the ones that make people skeptical about not being manipulated and still they are genuine and impressive. They can be really inspiring and a pride to every photographer’s portofolio, no matter if they are funny, dramatic or just miracles of nature.

The problem? He photoshopped himself into the photos:

Daryl Simon’s bald-faced move included sticking a picture of himself into a shot with a physical-therapy patient, then flipping the image and placing it next to a teen student.

"Evidence that his image was inserted and flipped can be seen by examining the single detail on his shirt above his fingers — that detail appears on the left side of the shirt in the top photograph, and on the right side of the shirt in the bottom photograph," prosecutors wrote.

Another particularly heartless snapshot shows the 38-year-old scammer purportedly comforting a sickly patient struggling during a rehabilitation exercise.

Simon even had the gall to submit fake letters of support from various charitable organizations and individuals, according to the US Attorney’s Office.

The judge didn’t buy it, and slapped an additional jail time for his shenanigans: Link – via Slashdot. Sadly, I can’t find any of the badly photoshopped images for your vieweing pleasure.

Holy Taco challenged readers to use Photoshop to make Twilight: Eclipse into a watchable movie. They selected the best 19 entries to post. Many didn’t really adhere to the original idea of the contest, like the picture here does, but they are funny anyway. Link

Wild Ammo photoshopped seventeen movie posters to reflect original casting preferences. O.J. Simpson as the Terminator? Yes:

“The head of Orion, who were going to release the film, called me up and said, ‘Are you sitting down? I’ve cast this movie. … It’s O.J. Simpson for The Terminator,’” Cameron said.

Luckily for Schwarzenegger — and perhaps the public — this sounded like a recipe for titanic failure to the director.

“I said, ‘This is the stupidest idea I’ve ever heard,’” Cameron said. “I didn’t know O.J. Simpson, I had nothing against him personally. I didn’t know he was going to go murder his wife later and become a real Terminator.”

Yup, Simpson was almost the Terminator. Who knows how the course of human history would have been affected if this had become a reality.

German photographer Josef Schulz traveled across the U.S., taking pictures of highway signs. He then photoshopped out the text, leaving only the shapes and colors. The series is called “Sign Out.” Can you guess what company the sign represents? More at the link.

So. Unless you’ve been living in a cave, I’m sure you’ve heard that President Barack Obama has won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize (surprise!)

The blogosphere was immediately abuzz with … confusion. What has Obama done to deserve to win? Isn’t it a bit premature? Are Norwegians just Obamafans? And does this mean that the Olympics is ditching Rio to come to Chicago? You’d expect this kind of reaction from his political opponents, but it seems that *everyone* was scratching their heads.

I know, I know – no politics on Neatorama. But I’m genuinely puzzled. What do you guys think is going on?

Designed by a team at the National University of Singapore, PhotoSketch is the latest and greatest in image creation systems.  The full description of how it works can be found here, but the basic process is this:

Draw a basic object, name it and repeat this for any other objects you want in your picture, then name the background. PhotoSketch then searches the Internet for images that match the descriptions given, and after a bit of sorting out, you have all the elements necessary for seamless stitching.  The possibilities seem endless.  Check out the video!

Campaigning MP Valerie Boyer, of President Nicolas Sarkozy’s UMP party, said the wording should read:"Retouched photograph aimed at changing a person’s physical appearance".

Mrs Boyer, who has also written a government report on anorexia and obesity, added: "We want to combat the stereotypical image that all women are young and slim.

"These photos can lead people to believe in a reality that does not actually exist, and have a detrimental effect on adolescents. "Many young people, particularly girls, do not know the difference between the virtual and reality, and can develop complexes from a very young age.

"In some cases this leads to anorexia or bulimia and very serious health problems.

"It’s not just a question of public health, but also a way of protecting the consumer."

Shown above is the before and after photo manipulation where Nikolai Yezhov, a one-time head of Soviet’s secret police NKVD and a central player in Stalin’s Great Purge was himself purged – from life and this photograph.

In a case of life emulating Photoshop, Korean designer Jinsu Park created this concept "Color Picker Pen" that can sense and then draw in the appropriate color:

the color picker pen enables colors in the environment to be scanned and instantly
used for drawing. the sensor detects the color and matches it to the color display. then the RGB
cartridge located within the pen mixes the inks together to create the color that has been scanned.

Gang member Richard Rodriguez fled on foot after a car chase, surrendered and subsequently got himself kicked in the head by an El Monte police officer (Don't remember this? LAist blog has the video clip). And now, he's suing for $5 million.

To better his chances in court, Richard's lawyer Nick Pacheco will perform what we'll call a "Gangbanger's Extreme Makeover":

... the attorney said his heavily tattooed client will be getting an extreme makeover in time for a trial, complete with a thick Tom Selleck mustache -- think "Magnum P.I." -- to cover the name of his street gang, which is inked on his upper lip. Richard Rodriguez will also grow hair to cover the tattoos on his shaved head. And he'll wear a nice, conservative suit. [...]

In the booking photo, Rodriguez's head is shaved, and the name of his gang hangs over his lip. Tattoos climb his neck. In the "after" rendition, he's wearing a black suit with a metallic gray tie, neatly combed hair and a lush mustache.

"People get past looks when you put on a suit and your hair is grown," Pacheco said.

However, rather than collecting the actual items, I collect and use high resolution photos of them to create Photoshop images that show myself in the uniform of a Captain (or equivalent rank) in whichever armed force and branch of service those insignia were worn by.
