Six years ago, New Zealand’s Department of Conservation (DOC) found 51 live specimens in Hawke’s Bay. Recently, a new survey team spotted 75 live Powelliphanta.

“Powelliphanta are one of our most amazing native invertebrates,” DOC ranger Mark Melville told The Dominion Post. “They are carnivores, giants of the snail world. They can live up to 20 years and they lay eggs that look like small birds’ eggs.”

The snails dwell on damp forest floors and forage for food at night. They mainly prey on earthworms but are also known to eat slugs, using a row of sharp, backward-facing teeth to grab their prey before devouring it using digestive enzymes.

Like some other land and freshwater snail species, powelliphanta snails are hermaphrodites. This means that any adult can mate with any other adult because both female and male sexual organs are present in each snail.

The species has been victim to endangered habitat and natural enemies, but the conservation efforts in areas like Hawke’s Bay are proving beneficial.

Ever wish that itsy bitsy crab you had for dinner were bigger, so that you could eat more of one instead of ordering another dish? Why not order a coconut crab, a Tasmanian giant crab or a Japanese spider crab? Who knows, with 13 ft of crab to deal with, you might not even be able to finish it all!

(Also available: escargot So big, you can’t even wrap your hands around it.)

This article over at Cracked also features jellyfish, spiders, worms and other creepy crawlies you would love to see magnified.

Puppies, kittens, infants: All adorable. And do you know why? Because they’re tiny. If you start to magnify these things, then you wind up with the substantially less cute wolves, jaguars and teenagers.

Yes, if there’s one thing nature teaches us, it’s that what may start out as an adorable little animal friend can quickly turn into a Lovecraftian horror when its itty-bitty wittle mouth gets big enough to start eating your face. And when the little versions are already a little bit creepy, the big versions are the stuff nightmares are made of.

Ten years ago, Tanya Angus was 5’11" tall and living in Michigan when she began to get migraine headaches and noticed her shoes did not fit. Not only did her condition worsen, but she started to grow and her voice got deeper. After several doctors thought she was making up her symptoms, her mother took Tanya to her childhood pediatrician who finally diagnosed her illness.

Tanya suffers from a rare condition called acromegaly, where excessive amounts of growth hormone are released. Andre the Giant was a famous sufferer, as was Richard Keil who portrayed the famous villain "Jaws" in the James Bond movies.

In Tanya’s case, a tumor wrapped itself around her pituitary gland, causing her condition. Unfortunately, despite several surgeries and medication, it has failed to stop the release of growth hormone. Today Tanya is a staggering 6’6" (2.0 m) and 480 pounds (218 kg), and still growing.
