My boyfriend told me I had to close my laptop for a couple minutes, then when I logged back on this was posted to my facebook wall. He sat across the room as I transcribed and then decoded it. In the bizarro version of Futurama it’s Zoidberg that does all the ass kicking. With rugged armor plates, vicious crab claws and a face scary enough to give Lanternfish nightmares, this alternate reality Doctor Zoidberg has a PhD in badassery and a Masters in post-apocalyptic fashion sense.

Another example of the winning combo of sci-fi geekdom and crochet in action! Behold the amigurumi Zoidberg(s) – the regular (red) one, and the Zoidberg from the parallel universe. Ohmigosh, they’re even holding the box.

New Craftster user Loefferst (I love finding new users!) came up with this design herself for an amigurumi Zoidberg from Futurama. She was also nice enough to share the pattern, so click through to see her post if  you want to make your own. I’m in love with the teeny tiny felt clothes and accessories.

In an APS News exclusive, Cohen reveals for the first time that in the 10th episode of the upcoming season, tentatively entitled “The Prisoner of Benda,” a theorem based on group theory was specifically written (and proven!) by staffer/PhD mathematician Ken Keeler to explain a plot twist. Cohen can’t help but chuckle at the irony: his television-writing rule is that entertainment trumps science, but in this special case, a mathematical theorem was penned for the sake of entertainment.

This grape-loving, solid gold bon vivant (built with taxpayer money, of course) is a decadent, vomiting opera patron, and he has no regrets. Interesting tidbit from Infosphere: “In the season three commentary, Matt Groening points out the importance of the name being hedonism bot and not hedonist bot – he is not only hedonist, he is the actual personification of hedonism.”

On this date in 1939, the New York World’s fair opened. One of the exhibits was a ride called Futurama, sponsored by General Motors. Visitors got a glimpse of what life would be like in 1960, particularly the vision of an interstate highway system and urban planning. Separation of industrial, commercial, farmland, and residential areas were presented as an admirable goal. Tony- and Emmy-winning actress and comedian Bea Arthur has died. Though she is best known as Dorothy Zbornak on the 80's television sitcom The Golden Girls, her career actually spanned seven decades.

To celebrate the life and career of Bea Arthur, let's take a look at 5 Things About Bea Arthur You Didn't Know:

1. Bea Arthur Was a Marine
Before World War II, Bea was a medical technician. She volunteered to join the US Marine Corps, becoming one of its first female recruits. (Source)

2. Bea Arthur Got Her Start in Comedy by Being a Lounge Singer
In an interview, Bea said that when she got up on stage to sign a torch song, the audience laughed at her because of her deep voice and height. The nightclub manager told her that she was in the wrong business being a lounge singer, and that she should be doing comedy instead. (Source)

3. Bea Arthur Never Had a Star on the Walk of Fame
Bea was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame a few months ago, but she never had a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A travesty!

She may have a shot yet, you can nominate someone for a Walk of Fame Star, but you'd have to wait five years first for a posthumous nomination.

4. Bea Arthur was in The Star Wars Holiday Special
She sang as Ackmena, the nightshift bartender in Chalmun's Cantina in Tatooine, in the much-maligned Star Wars Holiday Special of 1978.

5. Bea Arthur was the Femputer

In the 2001 Futurama episode, Amazon Women in the Mood, Bea was the voice of the Femputer, the leader of the man-hatin' tribe of Amazonian women. Bea has left us, but we can still hear her sentence Fry and friends to "death by snu-snu" over and over again.

Bea Arthur, rest in peace. You shall be missed.
