Die-Hard Fan

Posted by Alex in Sports on July 16, 2011 at 11:13 am

There are fans, there are die hard fans, then there's Roy Miracle. His daughter Juli took this photo of Roy in his final proclamation of love for the Ohio State Buckeyes:

"Now Dad is the permanent "I""

Father, the "I" was a HUGE fan.

Long time fan who was always the "I-O", is forever the permanent "I". Roy Miracle was shown in an OSU turtle neck that he loved, and holding the position that he loved! The rest of the long time fans are from left to right, Ann Robinson, Juli Miracle, my Dad (Roy Miracle), and Rick Ives.

The Five Stages of Star Wars Grief

Posted by Miss Cellania in Film, Science Fiction on May 18, 2011 at 8:09 am

Will Carlough grew up with Star Wars (as did many of the internet generation) and was an avid fan. He discusses the process of recovery in an essay at Slate.

In high school, I read more Star Wars novels than I did regular books—somewhere around 15—and I own three copies of each of the films’ soundtracks. I even won an award from almighty Lucasfilm itself for the hours I spent making a Star Wars fan movie.

It’s been a rough dozen years for us Star Wars fans. The release of The Phantom Menace split the community in half, the gushers (people who loved it) and the bashers (people who didn’t). If you can’t tell from my equating fandom with alcoholism, I am a basher. Each of the next two movies, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, was worse than the last, and it became increasingly hard to identify as a fan. After all, the whole franchise was based on six feature films, and I hated half of them (and only sort of liked Return of the Jedi).

Read how each of the stages: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, relate to his continuing recovery from Star Wars fandom. Link

Finally Joining the Club

Posted by Miss Cellania in Film on August 21, 2010 at 10:26 am

Eight-year-old Teresa Juniso mailed off $12 to the Wil Wheaton fan club and never received anything she was promised. Twenty-one years later, she wrote about the experience. That made Wheaton look like a bad guy, even though Juniso meant it as a humorous post. But he made it right by sending the promised fan club items and a letter from himself as the 15-year-old Star Trek: TNG actor to the 8-year old Teresa. So the story has a happy ending after all. See the letter and a transcript at Letters of Note. Link -via Codename: Beryllium

Sometimes the cleverest ideas are the simplest. The creative geniuses at the French design company Atypyk came up with this fan that looks like the Wi-Fi icon.

It won’t identify Wi-Fi Hotspots for you, but it’ll help you sweaty geeks cool off during the hot summer days: Link
