So, Jack in the Box created a Bacon Milkshake. Why? Because you secretly want one, that's why. Shame on you. The noted fast food chain, it seems, wanted to create bacon-tinged buzz. This will probably do the trick. It's all part of a new ad campaign that asks: If you like bacon so much, why don't you marry it? SFist called our local Jack to ask more about the porky dessert. When we asked if it had real bacon in it, the store manger explained, "Real bacon? Ugh no. It's just a flavored shake, flavored with syrup, I think."

We haven't been this intrigued since the advent of the Jumbaco.

Continuing the tradition of making every food product ever taste like bacon, Rogue has released a beer that’s sure to be Homer Simpson approved. Nick of DudeFoods deep fried balls of bacon mayonnaise. He started out by freezing baconnaise in an ice cube tray, then wrapping each cube with wonton wrappers. After deep frying and eating the balls, he referred to them as “absolutely terrible.” Presumably he means that in a good way.

You’ll need a broiling pan, a mini muffin pan, marbles, and a drill. It’ll be necessary to actually destroy the muffin pan, but it’ll be worth it.

The Denny’s restaurant chain understands that everything can be improved upon with the proper application of bacon. That’s why its chefs are now offering maple syrup sundaes with bacon bits sprinkled on top and between the layers:

[Johan Lundstrom] a scientist who runs a lab at the Monell Chemical Senses Center. He studies how the brain processes sensory information, like smell, for a living. He also told us he had an ex-girlfriend who became an ex-vegetarian once she tasted bacon.

Because bacon is one- to two-thirds fat and also has lots of protein, it speaks to our evolutionary quest for calories, Lundstrom says. And
since 90 percent of what we taste is really odor, bacon’s aggressive smell delivers a powerful hit to our sense of how good it will taste.

"There’s an intimate connection between odor and emotion, and odor and memory," Lundstrom says. "When you pair that with the social atmosphere of weekend breakfast and hunger, bacon is in the perfect position to take advantage of how the brain is wired."

He sought to bring bacon to the dessert menu, and hunted for a pie media capable of sustaining a bacon infusion while retaining deliciousness. International Bacon Day or Bacon Day is an unofficial observance, often celebrated on the Saturday before US Labor Day  (the first Monday of September). Some cultures, however, celebrate on December 30th, while others celebrate the day on the first Saturday in January after the new year.

Bacon day celebrations typically include social gatherings during which participants create and consume dishes containing bacon, including bacon-themed breakfasts, lunches, dinners, desserts, and drinks. Bacon Day gatherings may also include the consumption of soy bacon or turkey bacon.

Bacon mania is nothing new -bacon skates were in use in 1931!

So, yes, this photo was taken in November 1931 in Chehalis, Washington at the town’s Egg Festival. The occasion was a try to break the world record for largest omelette. Two women tied bacon to their feet and skated around the warming skillet to grease it. Then a team of chefs cracked and beat 7,200 eggs and made a breakfast delight.

So our friend over at GeekDad, Matt Blum, is on a mission which, in his words, means “trying anything and everything with bacon or bacon flavoring that I can lay my hands on. I will be trying the questionable bacon products as a public service, so you don’t have to.” To-date, he’s made and/or reviewed , Bacon Gumballs, a hamburger wrapped in ten strips of bacon, a hamburger ground entirely from bacon, and most recently: Fried chicken with a bacon crust.

If you think about it, “bacon burger” is kind of a coy tease. Ground beef patty with a slice or two of bacon. Come on! A real bacon burger would be one made from ground bacon – but can that be done? Or is the bacon burger simply a figment of culinary imagination?

Thankfully, we don’t have to wonder anymore. Matt Blum of GeekDad did the experiment in his Great Bacon Odyssey:

I wanted to cook the burger under the broiler, as I did with the bacon-wrapped burger last week, on a rack set over a Pyrex dish to allow the rendered fat to drain. Having read about the difficulties people making such burgers have had keeping them together, I decided to add one large egg to the food processor along with the 19 slices of bacon. I ground the bacon and the egg together, then, using my hands, pulled the mixture out and used a hamburger press to make a burger. It is possible that my hands have been greasier at some point in my life, but if so I have (fortunately) forgotten it. I was not quite prepared for the raw burger to look like pure fat, and I must admit that it didn’t look very appealing. But it was for science, so I soldiered on!

Camp Bacon was to be a one-day Davos of cured and/or smoked pork. Here’s a combination of memes I don’t think we’ve seen before: Star Wars and bacon.

The Bacon AT-AT was actually what I wanted to build before, but didn’t have enough time, so it seemed like the natural choice. The Bacon AT-AT stands 3 ft tall and is made with over 40 lbs of bacon. The body was made from foam, then the bacon was attached. This beast took 21 non-stop hours to build. If you’ve ever once thought to cook 40 lbs of bacon in your kitchen in one sitting, I can now personally advise against it.

A simple but elegant solution to a common household problem: you have raw bacon, but you have no frying pan with which to cook it. You do, however, have a machine gun. All you have to do is wrap the bacon in tin foil, tie it around the barrel of your Rheinmetall MG 3, and fire off about 150 rounds (250 if you like it crispy). Step-by-step pictures at the link.

I’ve always been fascinated by thermal lance since I saw it in the movies being used in safecracking (since then the Mythbusters have confirmed the plausibility but kinda sorta debunked its feasibility in a heist).

Theo Gray, whose book Theo Gray’s Mad Science: Experiments You Can Do At Home – But Probably Shouldn’t was featured on Neatorama Spotlight, did something even better: a thermal lance made of bacon!

From Theo’s highly entertaining Gray Matter column in Popular Science:

A thermal lance, typically made of iron instead of bacon, is used to cut up scrap metal and rescue people from collapsed buildings. It works by blowing pure oxygen gas through a pipe packed with iron and magnesium rods. These metals are surprisingly flammable in pure oxygen, releasing a huge amount of heat as they are consumed. The result is a jet of superheated iron plasma coming out of the end of the pipe. For sheer destructive force, few tools match a thermal lance. But iron isn’t the only thing that’s flammable in a stream of pure oxygen.

Bacon is fattening because it contains a lot of chemical energy tied up in its proteins, and especially in its fat. You can release that energy either by digesting it or by burning it with a healthy supply of oxygen. The challenge isn’t creating the heat; it’s engineering a bacon structure strong enough to withstand the stress of a 5,000°F bacon plasma flame.
