"Watermelon" Tomatoes

Posted by Jill Harness in Arts & Crafts, Food & Drinks, Pictures on October 12, 2009 at 12:20 pm

The picture above sure looks like a minuscule watermelon doesn’t it? Just imagine biting into it, skin and all, to discover it is entirely tomato-y though. That’s because the adorable creation is actually made from a green zebra tomato shell filled with tomato gel and topped with black sesame seeds. It might not be the most productive way to spend your time, but the effect is certainly fascinating.

"Cloud" Cloud Writing

Posted by Jill Harness in Arts & Crafts, Video Clips on October 12, 2009 at 12:13 pm

Artist Ron English took skywriting to a whole new level when he wrote the word “cloud” five times over Manhattan and let the words slowly become clouds. Lest you think Mr. English is one of those “artists” who thinks doing something a little strange makes you an artist, I suggest you view the gallery on his website –just a warning though, some of his paintings may not be SFW.

Oddee has a collection of some truly amazing ice sculptures, the most impressive of which is this massive ice castle in China. The other sculptures are also fascinating though. It always amazes me how much artistry is required to make one of these pieces when it will only melt away eventually anyway.

Doodurls - Oodles of Doodles

Posted by Queuebot in Arts & Crafts, Blog & Internet on September 1, 2009 at 3:01 pm

Got doodles? Here’s a blog called Doodurls that wants to display your doodles. Most people doodle during boring meetings, interminable classes, while waiting on hold… Doodurls wants to show them off, and they aren’t picky about your talent level either. On Doodurls, everyone’s got talent!

It’s easy to submit your latest margin masterpiece – take a pic of it or scan it, upload it somewhere (anywhere) and tweet the link to them on Twitter. They do the rest. It’s a lot of fun to send your own in or just see the weird things that go on inside people’s heads when they’re bored!

12 Fantastic Architectural Art Installations

Posted by Jill Harness in Arts & Crafts, Travel & Places on July 29, 2009 at 9:42 pm

Web Urbanist just put up a nice collection of art installations on buildings. They’re all great designs, particularly the tentacle piece above:

An artist calling himself ‘FilthyLuker’ installed inflatable octopus tentacles in the windows of an unnamed building in June of 2009, making it appear as if the building is being devoured by a bright green kraken that somehow emerged from the sea and got stuck inside.

Does anyone know where this building is?

Exploding Water Balloon Photos

These fantastic shots of water balloons taken with a high speed camera are just fantastic. Who knew water could look so fascinating?

They bring back memories of when you were a young scamp, mischievously dropping water bombs on hapless cyclists from overpasses, or soaking whole streets in drive-by drench-athons – but those days of innocence are gone now. So, it just leaves us to sit back and wonder at the beautiful physics of the things – as well as the devilish uses to which they can be put.

Physical Typography: Brilliant Built & Found Fonts

In a way, typography has come full circle – what started as a physical process of setting type in machines has been rediscovered as a physical art by a number of creative photographers and designers. Some of these unusual real-life alphabetic collections were found and photographed in nature while others were acted out, constructed or assembled from bodies and objects but all ten sets of type yield compelling images.

7 Incredible Computer Generated Works of Art

Posted by Queuebot in Arts & Crafts, Science & Tech on June 8, 2009 at 8:08 pm

When we consider art we tend to think that it is only created at the hand of man, but that simply isn’t true … Computers have been creating incredible works of art for years.

The News In Print blog has a neat review of 7 fascinating computer generated works of art:

The first ever exhibition of computer generated art was held at the Howard Wise Gallery in New York, in April 1965. It was entitled “Computer Generated Pictures”, as people agreed that the potentially dehumanising influence of the computer prevented the pieces in the show from being considered ‘art’ in the true sense of the word.

Driftwood Horse Sculptures by Heather Jansch

Posted by Queuebot in Animal, Arts & Crafts, Odd News, Pictures on May 13, 2009 at 1:15 pm

Heather Jansch creates absolutely amazing (and surprisingly lifelike) sculptures of horses using driftwood.

Equally amazing is the story of how she found her own style in the art world:

I went on to the now famous Goldsmiths College in London where sadly, at the time, figurative work was unfashionable. There was a life room, and models too, but no tutors ventured near. They liked and encouraged (typically) 6ft square green canvases with triangles and circles in bold clashing colours and sculptures using planks and blocks of polystyrene.

At the end of the first year I was asked to leave the course. I was told that I did not have the stuff that painters were made from and, if lucky, I might scrape a place somewhere to do graphics. My confidence was shattered. I was not interested in graphics. I liked the country, painting and constructing things from what lay around.

But that was then, and I went on to achieve my dream by virtue of fate, the generosity of others, luck and determination. I went my own way, not always wisely and not always to accolade from the establishment.

Kids Albums from the Seventies

Posted by Queuebot in Music on May 6, 2009 at 2:09 pm

Remember the days before Nick Jr, Cartoon Network, video games, and iPods?  What did kids do for fun?  They listened to records!

Here’s a bunch of interesting photos of kids music record covers.  Some of them have really neat cover art.  If you’re of the right age, they may bring back some memories… If not, just revel in the love of the 70s retro!

From Nancy Dorsner’s blog Dabbled:

Not long ago, my parents were cleaning out their attic, and sent me a bunch of old records (remember those things?) from when I and my brother were kids. I thought they were too cool not to share – some for the memories, some for the interesting album artwork.

For a mere $25, you can custom order your own original villain or as a gift to your loved ones or archenemies. For a little bit extra, he’ll include the "making of" video clip – sadly without the maniacal laugh worthy of a super villain.
