Police Warn About A Carjacking Scam Involving A "Child" Sitting In The Middle Of The Road

Automobile-related urban legends often involve drivers getting scammed or waylaid in some way by people using the road as their hunting grounds, luring drivers out of their cars so they can prey on them.

I've heard about drivers flashing their headlights to provoke a response, and stranded motorists flagging down good Samaritans for the kill, but the baby in the road trick is a new one- and it's kinda creepy.

A 33-year-old woman from Beaufort, North Carolina saw a child sitting in the middle of the road at 1:30 a.m. so she wisely drove up to investigate further and discovered it was actually a small dummy in kid's clothing.

She immediately called the cops, who informed her she was lucky she didn't get out of her car or she might have fallen victim to carjackers, the kid dummy serving as a clever ruse to draw people out of their cars.

This particular situation ended up being nothing but a prank perpetrated by teens, but cops say they've seen a similar scam used by carjackers who swoop in and steal the car after the driver gets out to investigate the dummy. And that's how a new car-related urban legend is born.
