Krampusfest

The first annual Krampusfest will be held at various locations around Los Angeles December 5th through the 21st. Conceived by the Cacophony Society, the festival features a public Krampus Run, the Krampus Ball, art exhibitions, and the Krampus Rumpus, with other events being added as they are organized. Many events will feature the Krampus LA Troupe in their elaborate costumes. Participants are also encouraged to dress as Krampus for the events.

Even if you can't attend, the Krampusfest blog has a lot of Krampus history and lore, as well as pictures of Krampus costumes from all over the world, and tips for building your own. -via Boing Boing

Another reason to be sorry/glad I moved away from L.A.

I was worried it was going to conflict with my favorite Southern California celebration of absurdity, The Pasadena DooDah Parade, but the event, started in 1978 when the Tournament of Roses Parade was put off one day because New Years fell on a Sunday, has changed its 'official' date frequently, from "just before the Rose Parade" to the Sunday after Thanksgiving to the Sunday before Thanksgiving to currently sometime in April (bringing more festive-ness to the Easter/Passover season, I guess).

A fellow draftsman & I used to draw sea monsters on our surveys in no print pencil when ever we drew a survey along a water way. We used the no print pencil because you couldn't allow these to show up on the printed copies that would be sent out to the client. Basically it was purple pencil and when you ran it through the print machine they wouldn't show up.

Love these maps! I'm delighted to hear the "monsters" have a purpose - makes them much more real, somehow!

Also enjoy the thought of Scotchdrnkr & his colleague adding sea-monsters to their river surveys - if it wasn't for getting them into trouble, I would love to see their clients' faces if a few slipped through the net and made it to the final version... :--)

Hail to Scotchdrinkr & Co.! I too embellish mapped directions with sea monsters and "Here be Dragons" and "Terra Incognita," etc.

When I read this article, I found myself thinking of Scylla & Charybdis from Homer's "Odyssey."
