What Is It? game 272

W00t! It's time for another collaboration with the ever-excellent What Is It? Blog. Can you guess what this odd item is used for?

Place your guess in the comment section. One guess per comment, though you can enter as many guesses as you'd like. Please do not post any web link or URL - doing so will void your entry. You have until the answer is revealed on the What Is It? Blog tomorrow.

Two prizes: the first correct guess and the funniest yet wrong one will win a T-Shirt from the NeatoShop.

IMPORTANT: Please write your prize selection alongside your guess, so visit the NeatoShop and take a look around. If you don't write your prize selection, then you don't get the prize. I think you'll like the selection of funny t-shirts and science t-shirts -or even t-shirts of your favorite blogs and websites.

See another picture of this object at the What Is It? Blog. Good luck!

Update: this is a traveler, or tire measuring wheel, according to the Dictionary of American Hand Tools it was used to measure the length of flat strap required for making a new wagon tire, further explaned at the What Is It? blog. The first correct answer came from Berhard, who wins a t-shirt from the NeatoShop! The funniest answer came from Rodney McDonald, who said it is "a moral compass with a handy grip!" That's good enough for a t-shirt, too! Congratulations, and thanks to everyone who played this week.

A „Measuring Wheel“
could be used for measuring the inside diameter and the outside diameter of a wagon wheel to make a precise fit.

Would like to know if it has written „Wiley & Russell MFG.CO Greenfield“ on it...

That there is a wagon wheel measurer, for measuring the diameter of wagon wheel biscuits. Getting the right diameter means you have just enough jam to marshmallow.

It's called a "Wheel Traveler" it is used to measure the circumference of a wheel in order to determine the length of Iron band needed to create a tire, which will then be shrunk onto the wooden frame creating a wheel.

A Ground Downer Wheel for locating the direction of the ground. BTW, it' s usually down, therefore the Ground Downer Wheel production was discontinued rather quickly. You can usually find one of these in the back of any given garage, hanging on a nail with the arrow still pointing towards the ground. Oh, Ground Downer...ceaselessly working even through neglect. It's almost beautiful.

It looks like a surveying wheel. It probably measures in yards but the ones at my school measures metres. You start with the zero at the arrow and walk, the ones at our school click every metre and you count the clicks to measure the distance you've walked.

I smile because... med.

It is a giant compass, but oh no, it is not one for the detection of magnetic north. It is simply too heavy and unwieldy. This is a compass for the detection of heavy metal. Best bought for and used by your close heavy metal enthusiast this will help them ensure that they will always know where the next concert is.
