Tanks Turned Into Playground Equipment

Military tanks can cost millions of dollars, but when they are obsolete and start to rust, what do you do? Repairing, refurbishing, or even hauling them away can cost a pretty penny. In the city of Omsk, a Russian military center, old tanks have been made into children's playground equipment. Admit it, when you were a kid, you'd kill to be able to climb on something like this! When I was growing up in Texas, we had a tank in the local park in PLano. Played on it all the time. Used to be able to get into the tank via the access hatch underneath. They welded that up.

Its still there.

So glad they never got rid of that tank. When I tour the old neighborhood, its brings back a lot of memories.

there's an authentic WWI tank sitting in my town center that kids love to play on, as I did when I was younger. You used to be able to wiggle under it and pop in where the controls were (welded together, of course) but that has since been covered up. Still though, driving by on any warm summer day you're bound to see small children dangling from the gun barrel. so awesome :)

We had a tank you could play in in our city park (mt. Carmel, IL) when I was growing up (the 80s and early 90s). It was open and you could climb underneath and in, or in through the top, all the moving parts were welded shut. In the late 90s, they welded the doors shut, and now I think its gone. It was a ton of fun playing in that thing though.

I played on an F-8 Crusader in the 90s in San Francisco. IT WAS AWESOME. And then something about lead poisoning.... It was recently added to the Pacific Coast Air Museum's collection. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2012/05/01/DD5A1OAEAP.DTL&ao=all

We had the same growing up in Lincoln, NE, late 60's early 70's. An old tank and a fighter plane (or maybe a trainer). We could get on them, in them and crawl out on the wings of the plane. They always smelled like weed and teenage shame.

Also had a fire engine from the 20's in a different park. I haven't been back there in 30 years don't know if they are still around, probably not.

Neat! In the late 50's early 60's when I was growing up in South Georgia they had decommissioned tanks from WW1 and II at the Veterans State park in Cordele, Georgia. They were open and we could actually crank the turrets around! Not safe for all the kids crawling around the tanks but we loved it!
