Man with Terminal Cancer Seeks TARDIS Urn for His Ashes

True geeks, Kevin "Wash" Pratt and Tashi King watched Serenity on their first date. Watchmen, Doctor Who, steampunk and conventions soon followed. Then, shortly after they married, Kevin was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer. He has endured for two years an illness that kills most victims of it within one. He is, Tashi says, "the Browncoat who *never* gives up."

But now Kevin is in hospice, and is making his preparations. He'd like for part of his ashes to be buried in an urn shaped like the TARDIS from Doctor Who. So Tashi is asking for help from the good people of Regretsy:

I am writing to you to try and fulfill a wish of his; after he passes my husband wants to have a portion of his cremains kept in a TARDIS urn. (The rest will be shot off in rockets he has built over the years with his friends.)

This has proven to be a bit of a challenge for me. I am only 25 and have not been able to work for the past two years to be his full-time caregiver; so hiring someone to make a custom urn is a bit out of my price-range.

i understand i have been looking for a urn in the shape of a doctor who dalek. i want it to talk (my recorded voice) when someone gets near it. I am having an artist friend create one if it looks good and you dont have one yet would you like him to make a ceramic urn for you

Many people don't have the ability to problem-solve like those of us who thought "cookie jar" or "mug/stein". Some think of it (piggy bank? USB hub?) but think that they don't seal well, or are the wrong size, or too impersonal to do the job. Many aren't crafty and/or have time to take a class to learn how to do it themselves or have resources to make something on their own. Sometimes there is someone who doesn't mind the challenge of making something for the sake of the challenge but need the spur of doing it for a reason that's better than "I did it" and "where am I going to put it?"

Give them a break. It's a good thought, a reasonable request, and if you don't have a productive suggestion then just don't post anything at all. They didn't ask for money - though we can assume they're hurting for it - just help with an urn.

Critical illness insurance? Don't make me laugh. That really is the biggest con in the insurance industry and that's saying something. Critical illness insurance comes as close to the Monty Python Neverpay policy as it's possible to get.

If this were an American show, I would worry more about lawsuits, but the BBC is a bit more classy. Sadly, my art leads more to drawing, but perhaps we could viralize this story and get the BBC's Quentin attention. They might make it happen.

No estel, giving people alternatives to going online and soliciting money from total strangers is apparently douchey.

I think if I were picking out an urn, I'd rather see one that was personalized. I would totally make one out of clay. I don't know if a commissioned artist would get in trouble, or would want to make something that's licensed and copyrighted.

Sucks to go through something like that, but it's an object lesson for those of us who don't have life or critical illness insurance.

Not sure why they need a fancy urn. People make Tardis-shaped everythings these days. Pay your other bills, get some plywood and some blue paint, and make your own tardis. Clay isn't that expensive. Take a course where you can build your own urn instead of an ashtray.
