Snoring Hummingbird

Well, how did you expect a snoring hummingbird to sound? This female Amethyst-throated Sunangel (Heliangelus amethysticollis) at a research facility in Peru is sleeping inside a device that measures its oxygen use. The machine is probably not really all that loud, but the sound was cranked up so we could hear the snoring. -via The Daily What

The poor dear bird having to sleep in all that awful noise and horrible sterile man-made research device…. this isn’t cute it’s sad. Poor thing will probably be killed once the “experiment” is over. :(

She’s probably crying…she is captive and tortured for a stupid experiment.

I can’t even hear its snoring. I just hear that annoying humming noises. I guess my analog hearing aid can’t hear the snorings. :(

The bird is fine. The bird is asleep so clearly it’s not terribly distressed. Seriously, don’t throw the word torture around. Certainly don’t immediately assume that these researchers would kill the bird. Why would they?

“Well, good work team! We learned a lot about the oxygen intake of Heliangelus amethysticollis. *neck snap* C’mon Eduardo let us grab cervezas.” (Translated from original spanish)

They’re not sadists, they’re not even unkind. They’re ornithologists so if anything that means they like birds way more than you cathy.

This bird is totally out of it, it can’t hear the machines. Hummingbirds don’t just sleep, they enter a state called torpor. It’s somewhere in between sleep and hibernation. Hummingbirds require loads of energy to keep up with their metabolism, but they can’t feed at night. So to preserve energy so they can continue on feeding in the morning, they enter the torpor state.
