Balcony Pools Hanging in the Air

By John Farrier in Architecture, Society & Culture on Feb 22, 2012 at 7:44 pm

There’s demand for more luxury housing in Mumbai, India, and the architecture firm of James Law is pitching its design for a huge residential complex. Among its features are small pools off the balconies that seem to hang in mid-air.

Maybe they should see if they can crack that whole slum problem first.

When that “unbreakable” glass shatters, the heavy flow of water will certainly help the initial clean-up of the internal organs that splash across the pavement below.

Architects are great at making digital mock-ups of designs that never see the light of day.

I totally agree with Chuck – - one flaw in that glass, or maybe an earthquake that cracks it (or, in my neighborhood, a stray bullet) and you would be part of a temporary 100 foot waterfall with a tragic ending at the bottom. I would NEVER get into one of those….

I don’t think this architect realizes just how heavy water is and how strong those balconies would have to be to hold that much.

I’ve seen how they construct buildings in India. This is not going to go well.

And the balconies to the right, just out of frame, are where they park their flying cars.

A first use for transparent aluminum.
