A Cherry Pie, an Apple Pie and a Pumpkin Pie, Each Cooked Inside a Separate Cake, Then Stacked Together and Iced to Form Another Cake

By John Farrier in Food & Drink, Living on Nov 22, 2011 at 6:33 pm

It is a called a cherpumple, and it represents all that remains good and right in this fallen world. Pastry chef David Lowery made this 21 lb. 10 oz. concoction for guests at the Grand Geneva Resort in Wisconsin. I feel a rekindling of hope for the human race because we can still do great things like this.

I am sure the filling in those pies is junk.

Probably just the typical bunch of HFCS, food-dye and corn starch.

Now if someone’s Mom, who is a real goddamned cook, and not someone slogging canned crap from Sysco in a food-service kitchen made this, it would probably be Teh PWNZ!

(grumpy old man rant over :P )

Finagle and Randi – If you look closely, you can see the pie crusts. The top and bottom pies are baked in white cake, while the middle pie is baked in chocolate cake. The light brown between the layers of white and chocolate cake? THAT’s the icing! It REALLY IS three pies baked in three cakes, then stacked and iced. Amazing concept, but I confess: it looks disgusting! I would NEVER even WANT to eat this monstrosity! Kind of like eating carnival food. Who would even want to eat a fried candy bar or – worse – fried butter on a stick! Yuck! Heart-attack waiting to happen. This cake/pie thing? Heart-attack AND diabetic coma!

If you take two cars and weld them together they are no longer two cars. They are one new car. You don’t have to add anything, not even the chocolate icing, in order to call two cakes stuck together a new cake. Look at a wedding cake – it’s typically several cakes stacked on plastic columns in order to make one big cake.

    Your argument is a lie.

    @Loudmusic

The issue is not that they call it the whole thing a cake, but that the title says that the three piecakes are *cooked* into a new cake. As you say, they are stacked and iced together. There is no further cooking beyond making the initial piecakes.

  27. Chef Zero
    Nov 23rd, 2011 at 3:50 pm

Ok, let me put a few things to rest,
Firstly no one is saying it isn’t possible. Clearly it is.
    Secondly this is:
3 baked pies, baked into 3 layers of cake that is then tiered and frosted.

It was not tiered then covered again in cake batter and baked again as the title will have you believe. This would not be realistic as you would overcook the already baked cakes during the second baking.

Now If I had to guess, I would figure that what REALLY happened was this.
3 frozen pies were defrosted to a temp that would allow them to bake to completion within the timeframe it would require the surrounding cake to bake to completion. Those 3 layers were then tiered and frosted, making this monster of a Pi-Cake quite easy to duplicate.

    Enjoy.

  28. Pibble
    Nov 23rd, 2011 at 3:51 pm

Really people??? You can’t just enjoy the creativity of this cake? You have to be rude and act like someone is forcing you to eat it? I think its incredible talented and awesome. Who really cares if there is a cake on the outside or not? THAT is what is wrong with America people… you have to complain about everything like you are so perfect. Remember you aren’t the one in the kitchen baking… you are the ones sitting on the computer being rude.

WTF? Really dude? Who are you kidding? Just because a cake is made doesn’t mean you HAVE to eat it!!

This IS what is right in the world, ingenuity, thinking outside the box, having the desire to try something different, having the will to not just follow all the misguided health nuts that really don’t know a thing about true health and would rather just lump everything that they wish they could have or have problems with because they are jealous into the “wrong” catagory.

Just because it exists, doesn’t make it evil.
It takes someone evil to make something evil.

I don’t think you would eat one whole slice, I think you would serve it like a wedding cake, a layer at a time. You slice all the way through, then serve each piecake separately. In my family, we all want different pies, and serving it this way would give everyone what they want and save valuable table/counter space, too. Great idea!

I find it very concerning to read all of the comments on here. The arguing and rudeness of individuals amazes me and yet some people are happy and pleasant. What it comes down to is happy people will find the good and angry people will find the bad. Optimism VS Pessimism

Yes, pretty sure the LOTR cake comment made my day. And Void Seeker, unfortunately, their fun is obviously to bash on others. And those saying all is wrong with this, if this is what we all ate for dinner every night, yeah, that would be a problem, but it is just new and original that needs to be embraced. Yes, as American’s many of us are spoiled beyond beleif, take for example our ability to roll out of bed on a cold day in a warm house, flip on the electic coffee maker, waste valuable time on the internet with strangers bashing people amazing creations. This is what should be eaten after Turduckin for the main course. There is a place in Cambridge, MA that prepares Turduckin. It’s a chicken, stuffed inside a duck, which is stuffed inside a turkey – all ready to be taken home and cooked. Stuffed the verb and stuffing the noun between layers. All completely boneless- cook, slice and serve.

There is nothing better than a perfectly made cherry pie, with sugar crystals on the top crust. Or pumpkin pie, with a little whipped cream. Maybe a cake with frosting.

    Individually.

You don’t need this sort of thing. This is just pure excess. A good cook can please people with something simple. A mediocre cook is one that has to go to excess.

My husband invented the “Kootenay Cake Pie” years ago. It wasn’t stacked as fancy as this, but it was a cherry pie in a chocolate cake.

I am the maker of this cherpumple. There is no tricks. I’ve made 7 of these so far that I serve to my brunch crowd, including 4 I made for the 900 plus this Thanksgiving. The pies were made then frozen then cake batter made and 1/2 put in 10 inch pans. The pies were taken out of the tins and placed in batter, covered with more batter and baked. When cooled they were leveled, stacked and decorated.
Bottom is pumpkin in spice cake, middle is cherry in chocolate, and top is apple in white.
    Thanks

I made the cherry in chocolate cake as a single layer and frosted it with chocolate sour cream frosting. I call it the Cherry Bomb. You can see it on my blog. I see above that someone else did the same thing. Good on ya:)

Why to people have to be so mean????

I think it’s beautiful and looking at it just makes me smile. It’s interesting that so many feel that it is a gluttonous act to even ‘create’ such a thing. I’m curious if they understand the meaning of moderation. I could easily consider a thin slice of just one layer or possibly a taste all three. Is that so bad?

btw: create is the key word here…it is a beautiful, scrumptious, artistic creation. What fun {and impressive} to serve it {in layers} for a large crowd.

I have to just say, to all the people who were talking about how the icing is the “fourth cake”, please learn how to read. The title says “A Cherry Pie, an Apple Pie and a Pumpkin Pie, Each Cooked Inside a Separate Cake, Then Stacked Together and Iced to Form Another Cake” It does form the final fourth cake once they’re stacked together. I understand that the cake is distracting but read the title correctly before you start talking. Thanks

Wow. No matter how creative or interesting or awesome something might be, there will always been someone negative to shoot it down. The ingredients are probably shit? Its a lie? It’s excess. Get over yourselves. I don’t particularly like pumpkin pie, but I can still appreciate the work that went into this.

Try and say something nice. Rejoice in the iced tower of deliciousness. Recognize that it took David Lowery’s talent and creativity to put this genius concoction together in a highly edible and beautiful way.

oh my goodness, this is wonderful. anyone complaining that this piece of culinary history is an abomination and the sandwich board announcing the irreparable decadence of the west needs to watch the news sometime. There will always be poor, starving people that we and others bomb to death and use the ashes to pave our twelve car garages – very rarely do we find someone so bent on our simplest pleasures that they build a cake shaped syringe of awesome like this gentle soul has. ps – haters and moralists commenting here already lose because they shouldn’t be wasting our precious resources (fuel/electricity) commenting online about a three-ring circus cake, they oughta be bean farming and raising goats.
