Painting With Light Photographs

Brian Hart creates these really cool light painting photographs by using exposure times up to 20 minutes long. Now that's what I call bending light! These images are so detailed that I can't help but wonder what sort of reference he uses while the shutter is open.

Never mind. After a few hours of ruminating on it during work time i figured it out. Its because it must have been pitch black and they were probably wearing black as well.

Excellent photo but still don't understand how he keeps the reference points so exact while the photo is being taken. Might be possible to build up multiple shots in a stacked image, that way you could play around and stack the best of the best traced images.
The alternate method I though of was that the people and chairs were there, everything was black and the light was traced around the objects while there were there.
