Leslie Nielsen's Final Joke

Actor Leslie Neilsen was known for his fart jokes. His gravestone, installed at Evergreen Cemetery in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, has one. The quote says, "Let 'er rip." Which could mean Rest in Peace, but we all know what he really meant. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/broward/fort-lauderdale/sfl-leslie-nielsen-gravestone-fort-lauderdale-pg,0,5624333.photogallery -via Screen Junkies

Cute. My father wanted to have "Other than that I'm okay!" written on his.

@senor espaniolo

"Let (h)er rip" is an idiom meaning "to allow"

"I just filled the tank up with gasoline, let 'er rip!" means "you are allowed to proceed with ignition."

But it is an informal permission not a formal allowance as a boss to a employee.

Leslie is saying "Let 'er rip" where "(h)er" is a fart. However rip also doubles for "Rest In Peace" or R.I.P. which is a common marking on gravestones to symbolize the wishes of the living.

Way to unnecessarily overexplain it, guys.

Leslie Nielsen used to carry around a whoopee-thing in his hand, and whenever he shook hands with someone or felt like it, he would squeeze it to make fart sounds.

To "let one rip" is to fart. To "let 'er rip" is - well, I'm sure the other posters have overinformed you on that.

@ Mr. Awesome: "There is always a measure of uncertainty prior to "let it rip." And to confuse even more it has been shortened to "let er rip" "

How is "let er rip" a shorter version of "let it rip"?
