Hipster Trap

By John Farrier in Society & Culture on Mar 14, 2011 at 12:47 pm

This photo of a hipster trap is allegedly from New York City. Contents: brightly-colored bike chain, American Spirit cigarettes, can of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, and plastic glasses. It just needs a Moleskine notebook to lure in more hesitant prey.

The irony of it is the artist would probably have been one of the biggest “hipsters” of them all, he is just trying to show how ant establishment he is by hating what he is.

If you fall for that you deserve to lose an arm. Then again, if there had been a Moleskin notebook…

It is also missing a trucker hat and a belt buckle made from a Nintendo game cartridge.

Oh noes – my seven year old likes plastic sun glasses and has a bright pink bike chain.

    Exactly, Vonskippy.

I totally don’t see the humor.

What did “hipsters” do wrong to deserve their limbs being mauled in a bear trap? WTF? (I’m quoting hipsters because that’s what the article says, I would have been dumbfounded for the meaning of this if not for the article.)

And why do we have to (try to) put a label on every single person for the seemingly single purpose to then be able to more easily ostracize, laugh at, humiliate, physically hurt or kill them?

This is sick, the more I think about it.

I mean tell me: how is this different from saying: oh look: that person is wearing a pink T-shirt; he must be gay. Let’s get a shotgun and shoot his leg off, you know, just for fun! Haha!

I have to wonder if that’s an honest-to-god bear trap. That would only make it better.

can’t find the humour in this. I agree with Vonskippy and hmm.

Maybe I’ll understand the hipster hate when somebody can describe what a hipster is.

Every definition of Hipster I hear is different from everybody else’s, and it almost always partially describes the person giving the definition.

As near as I can tell, Hipster is a convenient catchall term to ridicule people with different tastes than you. Like Fanboy. You use it to make people feel ashamed of what they like.

And just as the anti-Fanboys have ridiculed the Fanboys into silence and taken their place as the intolerable douchebags of the internet, so have the anti-Hipsters become the insufferable twats they seek to shame.

So to sum up: Hipster is a word that Hipsters use to differentiate themselves from slightly different Hipsters.

This is funny. And harmless. (Well, it is only harmless if it isn’t loaded). The person who did it is obviously just having a laugh.

I for one would like to see more counter cultural and stereotype traps. It Geek trap, yuppie trap, hillbilly trap, Jersey Shore/clubber trap.

Wow, sad how many bad-sport liberal-whiners with no sense of humor insist on coming to what is at least in part, a humor site.

I for one thought this was hilarious.

    And for those of you whining about people trying to classify groups, Welcome to Earth, alien creatures;
–you may now resume laughing at all the Guido jokes whenever ‘The Jersey Shore’ comes up in discussion, or the Redneck jokes when you have to fly from New York to LA, and the, etc. …

i think that people so uptight, such as “hmm” (am i pronouncing that right?) need to grow a sense of humor. it’s called a joke. get over it.

i’d test it with a stick and then snag them spirits

most people who hate on hipsters for drinking and smoking don’t realize that drinking and smoking are undeniably awesome

If you look at it symbolically– it’s pretty simple.
Instead of “here’s your sign” — “here’s your trap”

Smoking and drinking are traps… both addictive.

As is vanity and the need to be cool…

If you get sucked into any of that– you’re snagged by the trap.

Where people are making the hate leap, I’m not sure– unless its deep in your head — which interestingly, (perhaps intentionally?) was exposed via the trap’s set up.
    Pretty freakin’ psychologically clever ~
