A Car-less Los Angeles

Ross Ching’s video, “Running on Empty” is a time lapse vision of an LA without cars. Ross was inspired by Matt Logues’s E M P T Y L.A., a photography exhibition that showcases eerily abandoned streets in the city of angels. You can read about Ross’s work in his own words, here:

Spectacular time lapse pieces have sprung up all over the internet. I have even developed some awesome relationships with some of the creators. However, the majority of them seem very similar — like they should be on the Discovery Channel or in a visitor center. There needs to be originality. There needs to be pioneers. There needs to be something more than beautiful shots. There needs to be a human element. There needs to be a story.

Interesting video. It was hard to tell if it was just a lack of traffic or the streets were static pictures while the rest of the scene moved. It appeared none of the shadows changed on the street but you could see them change everywhere else. In one scene I could even seed people moving in a park, off in the distance.

Having lived in L.A. I’m astonished if this isn’t altered . Some of those shots of no traffic are incredibly improbable. Then again, if the filmographer happened to be where the freeways were closed due to crime…

I think I might be deranged but I can’t help but think that this would be a whole lot cooler if it was set to “In the house – In a Heartbeat” from 28 days later.

    If only….

The only way this will happen for real is if there is a terrible plague, and then it would only be fun for a few weeks.

I live in the LA area, and I need a car. The nearest grocery store is about two hours walk from me. My bank is another two hours in the opposite direction. Thank goodness I work from home now, but many people here live maybe a four-day walk from their job.

We’ll have the cars until we get neighborhoods again, with jobs and services all reasonably local, at least within biking distance.

Hmm yes, nothing says fun for the whole family like a good pestilence on the city eh?
