The Monster Engine

Dave Devries takes children's sketches of monsters from their imagination and renders them in paint, while keeping the scary details.
The process is simple. I project a child’s drawing with an opaque projector, faithfully tracing each line. Applying a combination of logic and instinct, I then paint the image as realistically as I can. My medium is mixed—primarily acrylic, airbrush, and colored pencil.

This reminds me a lot of an old MAD Magazine item, where they took childrens' drawings of toys and turned them into actual 3-D objects. There was a rocket ship, a wagon, and a few more I don't remember. It was really awesome how they captured the "interesting" perspective so perfectly. Now I have to go find that again... Hooray for the DVD with all the issues on it!!

Cool... There's a museum up here that has an exhibit of something similar, but it's done in glass:

ted: Of course, there is nothing wrong with the children's pictures. They are fine the way they are, but the children don't have the technical training to really give body to the monsters in their minds' eyes.
