What Is It? Game 133

Alex

Hooray! It's time for our collaboration with the always awesome What Is It? Blog - can you guess what the scary object to the left is used for?

As usual, the first person who guesses correctly as well as the submitter of the funniest yet ultimately incorrect guess will get T-shirts of their choice from the NeatoShop. Science T-shirts? Funny T-shirts? We got 'em!

Place your guess in the comment section. One guess per comment, please. You can enter as many guesses as you can think of. Please write no web links or URLs - doing so will invalidate your entry. IMPORTANT: Please write down your choice of T-shirt from the NeatoShop along with your guess.

You have until the answer is revealed at the What is it? Blog tomorrow. For more clues, definitely check out the What is it? Blog. Good luck!

Update 4/11/10 - The answer is:a lightning rod. Congrats to Lucas who got it right first, and Tim C for kraken prod (I'm kind of a softie for krakens)

It looks like a large meat spit to me, the middle one pierces the meat and the smaller ones keep the meat in place as it rotates... It usually comes with a twin though if it is.

:S Could be wrong.. Usually they only have 2 smaller spikes, but you never know those crazy old medieval folk, they may need a extra large one for roastin those giant boars..

I doubt im right but on the off chance, The last cookie t-shirt is cool, M size.. But those space invader ice cubes are cooler..

The science education outreach organization I manage (The Physics Factory, Tucson, AZ) makes "regular" liquid nitrogen ice cream to entertain kids at various programs we present, but I love the idea of making alcoholic liquid nitrogen ice cream for adult gatherings. What a great idea!

In Joe Haldeman's classic Sci-Fi novel "The Forever War", the soldiers do their training on a fictional planetoid far beyond the orbit of Pluto.
Really amazing description of the effects on hardware and people at about 2ºK.

As for cooking with Liquid Nitrogen: Why isn't the chef wearing gloves?
And if the alcohol in the sorbet remains supercold, how does somebody eat it without getting frostbite on the lips and tongue?

I commented here just to comment that the design for the Absolute Zero shirt is, well, cool I guess, but the problem is some people know absolute zero as -275 and not -459. I was hoping you had two options here.
