Clowndoctors

By Alex in Health on Feb 10, 2010 at 3:12 pm

Apparently years and years of medical schooling isn’t enough to make good doctors. They also need to go to … clown school!

Just kidding. A charity in Northern Ireland is recruiting clowns to entertain sick children in hospitals and hospices:

Clowndoctor Elaine Duncan, aka Dr Twinkle, said she loved to see the smiles on children’s faces.

"The children have the choice whether they want to chat or play with us as we want to make sure they feel as comfortable as possible," she said.

"It’s great when you do something that makes them giggle and you know they are having fun."

It’s a story just begging to be made into a movie. Hollywood, can you feel it? A real life story inspiring a movie inspiring a real life story? Someone call Robin Williams! Wait, what? Oh …

[I apologise if this is a repeated post, but I didn't get any feedback the first time around)

    I am SO not impressed.

    (sorry for the big URL)

So, there were already clown doctors in the states in 1993.

In fact, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Apple_Circus says « One of the biggest steps in the institution’s history was taken in 1986, when the circus opened the clown care unit, a group of professional clowns, trained extensively in hospital procedures, circus skills, and improvisation, make rounds as “clown doctors.” »

Why are so many people scared of clowns?

Because clowns are evil and creepy.

Jack Handy said it best: “To me, clowns aren’t funny. In fact, they’re kind of scary. I’ve wondered where this started and I think it goes back to the time I went to the circus, and a clown killed my dad.”

Dr. Bumper T. Clown and his Caring Clowns friends (http://www.bumpertcaringclowns.com/)have been entertaining children (and adults!) at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, NJ and at other hospitals on the east coast (and a few on the west).

If the clowns make the children happy, it’s great when did our society become so negative, don’t you know the searching heart finds hope in unexpected places. At least the doctors take time to do something positive.

How many of us made someone smile today?

Well, it depends as what I have always believe that LAUGHTER IS STILL THE BEST MEDICINE. Just like Adam Patch (Robin William portrayal). He said: “these people are already suffering and probably would die too. would it hurt to make them laugh even for a minute and then make a difference?”

When I had to lay in a hospital bed for weeks or months at a time (I had cancer when I was 6-8 yrs) the only entertainment was the craft lady who came once a week. Wendy would come to your bedside on Wednesdays for about half an hour. She showed me how to make a paper aeroplane and a pompom from wool. I’d have given anything for something like clowns! I hope this project is successful!

Great. Now kids will expect clowns everywhere. The kids need to learn that getting hurt is a bad thing. How many kids will start intentionally breaking their arms just to get to lay in bed and watch clowns for a couple months?

There are hospital clowns in Finland also… And Zanuha, I think this service is mainly meant for children who have to stay in hospital for months due to severe illness. Maybe they are afraid of the medical procedures and clowns can help to reduce that fear.

I think pets are a better idea. Nothing like a nice puppy dog to cheer up a sick kid. I don’t like clowns either. They are creepy.

Erm, I don’t know any hospitals in Europe that _don’t_ have clowns…
