Driver Shoots His Way Out Of Submerged Car

By Miss Cellania in Everything Else on Jan 19, 2010 at 2:15 pm

An unnamed 28-year-old man was driving over a bridge in Roseville, California when his phone activated and startled him. He drove his station wagon into Pleasant Grove Creek, where it sank six to eight feet under water.

The Roseville Fire Department said the man used his handgun to shoot out his vehicle window, giving himself an opportunity to escape and swim to safety.

The man flagged down a passing vehicle and was treated for minor injuries by emergency crews.

Remember that tip the next time you drive into a body of water. Link -via Arbroath

“When his phone activated and startled him”?

That has got to rank along with “The dog ate my homework”.

How exactly was the ‘unarmed’ man armed with a handgun?

That’s what happens when you don’t pay attention. I guess unnamed and unarmed are two different things.

One of the comments on the story questioned the wisdom of a man who can be startled by a cell phone carrying a loaded firearm. Then again, the dog that ate the homework is not much of a threat, either.

Once again someone using a handgun in place of a hammer.

Good thing nobody got shot like last time.

“When all you have is a hammer, problems all start to look like nails.” – I leave the reader to adapt this to handgnus as necessary.

    Another gun, another life saved.

I can just see it now, the NRA and their ilk waxing lyrical about how a gun saved a life in this case.

Wouldn’t have mattered which way he shot. If he was totally submerged, the bullet would have slowed down about 6 inches into the water and virtually stopped anyway.

One of these days I’ll stop being surprised at how bitter and cynical everyone is on the internet.

Sounds like Roseville to me… good chance he was high, that’s why he got startled. Just IMO.

If a cell phone startles you so badly that you drive off a bridge, you should probably not be behind the wheel of an automobile.

    @ Skyfrog

    Nor have a gun.

Lesson: If you are that easily startled, turn your cell phone off while driving.

I’m thinking that he didn’t want to admit he was using his cell phone while driving.

He should have shot the phone before he got in the car.

I had a comment but my dog ate it.

    .. or I shot it, dunno…
