Pantone Color of the Year 2010: Turquoise

By Alex in Everything Else on Dec 9, 2009 at 2:59 pm

Pantone, the company which business is to know everything there is to know about colors, has just unveiled Color of the Year for 2010 (drumroll, please): turquoise!

"Turquoise is universally appealing. It puts everyone in the same state of mind — on vacation," says Jane Schoenborn, design director at Lilly Pulitzer. "Turquoise for us is a really big color. A lot of times it’s transporting, whether you’re actually going to a resort destination or not."

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, says there was no runner-up to turquoise in her mind because people crave escapism and freshness after a tough year. The shade is on the cusp of blue and green, which makes it both inviting and serene — characteristics associated with blues — and invigorating and luminous, which comes from green, she says.

"Transporting" was a word many used for turquoise, a shade that takes designer Tommy Hilfiger to the beach, especially the Caribbean, St. Tropez, France, or Southern California, which served as the inspiration for his newest collection. In jewelry, he thinks of the American Southwest, or Central or South America.

Well, that’s better than the Color of the Year 2009, which was Mimosa Yellow: Link | Official Pantone web page about the announcement

Hmm… maybe it puts people in mind of “vacation” because it looks like the shabby 1990′s curtains and carpet in the bargain hotel that is all you could afford in this economy.

Seriously, that color is so last decade, and now I guess it’s “retro” so it’s fashionable once again. I still say “No thanks.”

The walls of my room growing up were a sickly, turquoise color. I escaped FROM there, darn it.

Hmm, this week it puts me in mind of the mouldy something I found under a computer at school. Perhaps a segment of orange – whatever it was it’d been there for long enough to liquefy and stink like puke, but not dry out.
Took ages to clear up and was just that colour.

    Turquoise so 2010…?
I agree with Katthe7th – I have vivid turquoise memories of 1989-1990…- I remember that especially because for me those were the years that I emerged out of a clotheswise-speaking pitch-black-TheCure-like punk period in my life. Turquoise was my 2nd other color after red that I dared to wear.

So yes indeed- Turquoise is soooooo Retro….!

I like when people tell me what color to like, to buy… not. Fashion is so empty.

Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I really like turquise… I know its coming back blah blah. But when I wear that colour it really makes my eyes pop.

I really admire Leatrice and I love the work that Pantone puts out. But I think that this year’s pick is pure delusion. Turquoise is tired.

Hi folks! I´m very happy to see turquoise is getting that attention, because turquoise deserve it. It´s absolutely wonderful to go on a coast to see turquoise allover. Many coasts and beaches are filled with garbage from tourists and ships. What do you prefer? Destruction of the beauty or the color of beauty? C´mon it´s turquoise and it doesn´t kill you when it´s the color for 2010.

btw: Become a fan of turquoise http://facebook.com/followthecolor
