Bird Drops Bread, LHC Shuts Down

By Miss Cellania in Odd News, Science & Tech on Nov 5, 2009 at 9:25 pm

You can’t make stuff like this up. A piece of a baguette dropped by a passing bird caused a shutdown at the CERN Large Hadron Collider.

The bird dropped some bread on a section of outdoor machinery, eventually leading to significant over heating in parts of the accelerator. The LHC was not operational at the time of the incident, but the spike produced so much heat that had the beam been on, automatic failsafes would have shut down the machine.

The LHC is scheduled to be reactivated later this month. The bread incident won’t affect those plans. Link -via Boing Boing

Sign from above. Someone should check Biblical prophecy on this one.

That's ridiculous, yet understandable. Nice pic.

Oh, and The Bread Incident should be Guns n Roses' next album title.

"It's not impossible. I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home, they're not much bigger than two meters. "

What happens if a bird drops a piece of toast with the Virgin Mary on it?

    Good one, Red-Two.

At least it was a bird and not a (womp) rat.

It's just like shooting Womp Rats back in Beggar's Canyon.

As long as it doesn't cause an resonance cascade in the anomalous materials test chamber, they should be perfectly allright.

I hope that they can get this working before someone sneezes and causes the thing to malfunction and break down.

Call it what it is-courtesy Neil Young-"it's a piece of crap." Very expensive piece of crap.

That if-if, they ever get it running? Will prove that scientists are very good at finding very small, very unimportant whatsits.

I suppose the nature freaks will use this GAIA poppycock to explain why the bird would drop the peice of bread he had and shut the place down
