Ever Dream This Man?

Posted by Miss Cellania in Everything Else on October 14, 2009 at 11:55 am

In 2000, a psychiatric patient drew a picture of a man who appeared in recurring dreams. The picture was left out on the doctor’s desk, where another patient recognized it from his dreams as well! With a bit of investigation, other patients who saw the same face in their dreams were found. As of now, at least 2,000 people recognize the face as one they’ve dreamed about. How about you? Can't say I've ever seen him, but it looks like a pretty generic face; it could pretty much be ever-so-slightly morphed to match lots of faces/expressions.

I bet it's that slight smile and the deep eyes. Probably people dream of someone with those attributes and then say it's this same guy. I can't say I've ever seen him in my dreams though. I usually dream about people I have already known or seen.

If it is not a hoax, maybe the brain tries to construct a face from a smiley symbol?
I once read that with babies the opposite happens: they see a face, even the mother, as a circle with eyes and a mouth, not unlike a smiley.

one of our IT smartypants had to spoil the fun:

I say this because a whois shows that the domain is owned by an Andrea

I'll have to agree with #25. I did that whois look up too with the same results. I was almost had!

I remember reading something on listverse.com about how there are actually no unknown faces in your dreams; they are actually culled from your reality. Maybe you just haven't realized that the mysterious lover in your dreams shares a striking resemblance to your pharmacist.

I highly recommend not visiting this site. After visiting it my computer has crashed three times and has never done it before. Yes, it's a hoax. Only people w/ higher degrees of artistic ability and experience would draw the way those pictures are drawn. Also, there is never a mention of any doctor's or sources. While the quotes are somewhat believable--unto the intercourse one at least, haha--the flyers are a dead give away. The picture close to Che's portrait in Havana is a dead give away to what's going on: mass imaging into the subconscious on the masses through repetition of images.

I do think, I dreamed of this man. It was a peaceful and pleasant dream.
On the other hand, the face looks like some average of several faces, so that it could be that the man in my dream just resembled this one in one or another aspect. Hard to say. I also noticed, that normally the people in my dreams don't really have faces but kind of facial blurs, so it would be easy to imagine or rather project this face into the one I dreamed of.
And I am wondering all the time how I can actually remember a face that I dreamed about ten to fifteen years back.
Must be a mistake by my mind...

  43. Kev
    October 15th, 2009 at 8:05 am

Viral marketing, yes. But it's fairly well done (except for the failure to register the domain under the name "Dr Alphonsus Headshrink, Psychiatrist") and it's creepily enjoyable to suspend disbelief for a minute or two. Like a zombie movie. I know those are fake too.

  44. Qrystal
    October 15th, 2009 at 8:43 am

He looks like a cross between Syler (a 'bad guy' from the TV show Heroes) and Alfred E. Newman (from MAD magazine).

I think the power of suggestion is strong with this story. I wonder how the so-called 'investigation' took place. I picture it going something like this:

"Have you seen this face before?"
    "Ummm... I'm not sure... maybe?"
    "What about in your dreams?"
"Yeah, that could be it, maybe that's why I only vaguely remember it."
    Wham, the person suddenly believes.

    Or, worse:

"This face is seen in dreams by thousands of people around the world!"
"Hey, he DOES kinda look familiar, I think I've seen him in my dreams too!"
Theory confirmed! Except that it's bullshit.

On the other hand, if 2000 people have all independently drawn the same mysterious face from their dreams, then maybe they've got something here. But they don't say that this is the case, so I highly doubt it.

Regardless of wether it is viral marketing or not, the face has a certain resonance to it that creates a strange feeling. Perhaps we should all take into account the ability of corporations, media, and forced environments like supermarkets to apply their wants onto our collective psyche. It is frightening as a marketing tool, just as much as it is unabashadly scary to think someone could slip into your dreams.(dream surfer theory) I will not sleep well no matter where this creepy face was concieved!

  52. acheron
    October 15th, 2009 at 5:42 pm

It looks quite a bit like my dad, so I guess I'd have to say yes, I've dreamed of him. I'll have to have a chat with him about personal space and staying out of other people's dreams.

  53. tripleX
    October 15th, 2009 at 6:44 pm

How can we get into peoples heads. Dreams are good, let's enter the collective subconscious. Let's make something people remember, something disturbing. Let's take the big, round face of a child, with big eyes and a small nose, and give it sideburns, 'criminal' eyebrows, hair and ears of an adult. Let's creep out those gullible people out there.

Offcourse it could also be part of a promotional campaign for 'Don't Look Now 2' or 'Sandman, the Movie' and the actor just looks funny...

Someone's already said it, it's a fake viral marketing ploy for something. The domain in registered to an Italian guerrilla marketing company.

A simple whois on the domain reveals everything, very noob mistake and someone should be fired for not making the whois hidden.

I know this is weird, but I’ve been trying to find who he is for sometime. I forget what blog I was on, someone sent me a face book link to some guys page claiming this was him... I did not think much of it at first. i went to his page, I’ve been thinking of it ever since. So I tried to contact him, not knowing what to say, so I just thought I would ask if I know you? His response was chilling! He said," dreams are our innermost feelings unable to be expressed in the present." I know its BS but here goes koreadave42@yahoo.com "happy this guy hunting!"

Sorry, I’m not buying it. Anytime someone from the science or medical field makes a new discovery, they are going to want their named attached to it and get the credit. The fact that no doctors are named, despite the fact that several were involved, seems more than a little suspicious to me. My guess is it’s a viral marketing campaign, for a movie or tv show, staring, from the looks of it, Gavin McLeod.
